Decima Mullins hires Strike at her hiding place in Kent. She has a newborn baby named Lion. She believes the mutilated body found in the vault of Ramsay Silver, a masonic silver shop, is her missing boyfriend Rupert Fleetwood.
Police identified the corpse as Jason Knowles. Decima refuses to accept that. She wants proof of Rupert’s death.
Strike and Robin inspect the shop and review security footage. Their contact Shanker warns them that the murder was a masonic hit.
A wealthy Freemason ordered the killing. The stolen silver is a historic collection known as the Murdoch silver.
The investigation spans multiple counties. Robert Galbraith’s narrative follows the partners as they reconstruct the victim’s identity. They determine that Rupert Fleetwood is alive in Sardinia under an alias.
Rupert fled after a DNA test revealed his godfather Dino Longcaster was his biological father. That made Decima, who was pregnant with his child, his half-sister. Rupert used Sacha Legard and Tara Campbell to escape.
The actual victim in the vault was Tyler Powell, known as “Lugs.” He took the alias “William Wright.” The killer is Ian Griffiths, nicknamed “Griff.” Griffiths was Tyler’s neighbor in Ironbridge.
Griffiths is a convicted sex offender. He ran a trafficking ring with Jim Todd and Wade King. He murdered Tyler to protect his operation. He hid the stolen silver in the walls of Ramsay Silver.
He killed Sofia Medina and Jim Todd to silence them. He kept Sapphire Neagle captive in his basement. The body of missing child Jolanda was buried under his concrete floor.
Strike tracks Griffiths to Ironbridge. A violent struggle follows. Strike nearly loses his ear. He subdues Griffiths and rescues Sapphire Neagle.

Strike also learns he is not the father of Bijou Watkins’ baby. He reaches a tentative reconciliation with his biological father Jonny Rokeby.
Robin discovers Ryan Murphy has relapsed into severe alcoholism. She finds a wedding ring hidden in his wardrobe. She decides to end the relationship and packs her bags.
The final scene takes place on the office stairs. Robin is leaving for Murphy’s birthday dinner. Strike follows her and says, “I’m in love with you. Marry me.” The novel ends there.
