Clans of the Alphane Moon Summary: The Deep Dive

Warning: This section contains spoilers.

The novel opens on Alpha III M2, a moon in the Alphane system. Decades earlier, it hosted the Harry Stack Sullivan Neuropsychiatric Hospital, a Terran facility for colonists who broke under deep-space pressure.

During a war between Terra and the Alphanes, the hospital was abandoned, leaving the inmates behind. Their descendants formed a society divided into clans by psychiatric diagnosis.

The clans live in separate cities, each with a defined social role:

  • Pares (Paranoids): Planners and defenders based in Adolfville.
  • Manses (Manics): Warriors and technologists in Da Vinci Heights.
  • Heebs (Hebephrenics): Apathetic laborers and ascetic saints in Gandhitown.
  • Skitzes (Schizophrenics): Religious visionaries in Joan d’Arc.
  • Deps (Depressives): Pessimists in Cotton Mather Estates.
  • Ob-Coms (Obsessive-Compulsives): Ritualistic clerks and functionaries.
  • Polys (Polymorphic Schizophrenics): Childlike, creative members of society.

On Earth, Chuck Rittersdorf works as a CIA programmer writing scripts for propaganda simulacra. He is suicidal after his wife, Mary Rittersdorf, a marriage counselor, separates from him.

Mary accepts a role with Operation Fifty-minutes, a Terran mission to the Alphane moon. Officially, the mission will provide therapy to the colonists. Unofficially, Terra wants to reclaim the territory.

Chuck’s CIA boss, Jack Elwood, manipulates him into operating a simulacrum named Daniel Mageboom to spy on Mary’s mission.

At the same time, Chuck is blackmailed by Lord Running Clam, a telepathic Ganymedean slime mold. The slime mold pushes Chuck into a second job writing scripts for Bunny Hentman, a famous TV comic.

Hentman is secretly an undercover operative for the Alphane Empire.

On the moon, the clan council meets to discuss the Terran invasion. Gabriel Baines, the Pare delegate, and Annette Golding, the Poly delegate, argue that the clans must unite.

When Mary’s ship lands, she views the inhabitants as deteriorated hebephrenics and plans mandatory hospitalization.

Baines tries to stop her by sneaking into her quarters with a Heeb aphrodisiac. The plan backfires and awakens Mary’s own violent impulses, leading to a chaotic encounter.

The Manses launch a counter-attack and destroy Mary’s ship. On Earth, the CIA moves to arrest Bunny Hentman, who flees to the moon.

Chuck also ends up on the moon, caught between loyalty to Terra and concern for Mary. Hentman proposes that the clans ask for Alphane annexation to avoid Terran re-hospitalization.

Chuck uses the Mageboom simulacrum to address the clan council. He delivers a scripted argument for Alphane protection. The council votes to join the Alphane Empire, ending Terra’s claim.

Afterward, Mary takes the same psychological tests she once administered and discovers she is a Dep with manic streaks. Chuck tests as a Norm.

He decides to stay on the moon and found a settlement called Thomas Jeffersonburg. Despite earlier attempts to kill each other, Chuck and Mary reconcile and choose to live together in the moon’s society.
