Layers of Guilt and Deception

These are the central ideas that drive the plot and character actions.

ThemeHow the book presents it
Survivor’s GuiltCassidy constantly plays a mental game of who she would save. The survivors attend annual reunions out of fear, not friendship. Clara’s suicide and Ian’s addiction show the long-term effects of trauma.
Consequences of DeceptionThe group maintains a fabricated story about the crash. Oliver hides Ian’s death. Joshua hides his affair. These secrets create a fragile alliance that is easily broken by Russell’s plot.
RetributionRussell Poranto’s entire relationship with Cassidy is a lie. He uses her to steal her journals and uncover the truth. His goal is to force a confession and make the survivors pay for Clara’s death.
Illusion of SafetyThe beach house is supposed to be a safe haven. It is breached by hidden cameras and threats. The storm traps the characters, turning their refuge into a prison.
