Spies, Lies, and Alibis Summary: A Sweet & Stabby Spy Romance
Two Cover Stories, One Target
Two undercover operatives slip into the same Dallas museum gala, each hunting the same crime boss, and neither knows the other is on the job.
That is the setup of Spies, Lies, and Alibis by Natalie Walters, a Christian romantic suspense novel built on secret identities, old grudges, and a twelve-year gap in a friendship that never quite ended.
FBI Special Agent Ben Bradley and covert SNAP Global asset Cybil Langford grew up as childhood frenemies in Texas.
Now they are adults with fake names, handlers, and a shared target: Lorenzo Ramirez.
Their separate missions keep colliding, and every collision forces them closer to the truth about each other.
TL;DR: The Quick Brief
- The premise: An FBI agent posing as a financial advisor and a SNAP Global asset posing as an executive assistant work the same cartel case from opposite angles.
- The complication: They recognize each other from childhood, but neither can blow their cover to explain why.
- The stakes: A crime boss plans to auction a rare super-mineral to international buyers through the dark web.
- The romance: Old misunderstandings resurface while forced proximity and shared danger push them back together.
- The tone: Fast, witty, and suspenseful, with banter sitting next to gunfire.
The book moves from Dallas high society to a Lake Lagoverde villa in Italy and back to a Texas family ranch, tracking two careers built on secrets and one relationship that stalled on a misunderstanding.
Spies, Lies, and Alibis Summary: The Full Story (Spoilers Ahead)
Spoiler warning: The following section recounts the plot, including the ending.
FBI Special Agent Bennett “Ben” Bradley has spent eighteen months undercover as “Craig Miller,” a wealthy financial advisor at AJ Finance. His operation targets Lorenzo Ramirez, a crime boss tied to money laundering, arms trafficking, and the murder of FBI Agent Daniel Morales.
At a gala inside the Dallas Museum of Art, Ben tries to reach the Mayer Library to plant a tracking device in Ramirez’s laptop. Someone else is already at the lock: Cybil Langford, a covert asset for SNAP Global, planting a listening device on her employer Earl Edmond, his son Sebastian, and Ramirez.
Cybil trips a silent alarm and slips away, and the two collide in the hallway. Ben recognizes her instantly, but Cybil pretends not to know him, irritated that his alias “Craig Miller” matches the name of her high school ex-boyfriend.
Ramirez and his attorney Jimmy Rook brief Ben on a billion-dollar deal that requires an immediate trip to Lagoverde, Italy. Cybil ends up booked across the hall from Ben at Villa SerendipitĆ”.
Ben’s attempt to plant an air-drop software sniffer fails because Ramirez uses an encrypted hardware key that generates a fresh code daily. Cybil, meanwhile, loses her luggage, buys an ill-fitting tracksuit, and crashes a produce bike into a tomato cart before Ben rescues her on a tandem bicycle.
On the villa balcony, Cybil tells Ben how a fraudulent advisor named Celeste Harlowe took her mother’s life settlement after her father died. That loss explains why Cybil pursues control and stability so relentlessly.
During a meeting, Ramirez threatens project manager Giancarlo over delays involving an imported material called Aurelite-X. Cybil tries to pick the lock of Ramirez’s office to photograph documents, but footsteps interrupt her and she escapes onto a second-story ledge, dropping her father’s gold thumb ring inside.
She climbs into Ben’s room with a story about rescuing a cat. Ben later retrieves the ring from Ramirez’s desk during a private conversation with Rook.
Back in Dallas, FBI forensic accountant Agent Seth Jackson, posing as investor “Grant Holloway,” comes down with severe flu. Disoriented, he accidentally gets into the back seat of Cybil’s car.
Believing she has kidnapped an FBI agent, Cybil panics, consults her handler Athena, and leaves Seth in the Merius Hotel lobby with a note for the FBI. To keep Cybil from being questioned by Rook, Ben starts a small grease fire in the restaurant kitchen and triggers an evacuation.

Cybil retreats to her family’s Holt Ranch in Cypress Creek, Texas, and Ben follows. A middle-of-the-night kitchen scuffle ends with flour, eggs, and a banana thrown before Cybil’s uncle Buddy interrupts holding a rifle.
The two shoot clay pigeons on the ranch and reopen old arguments, including the misunderstanding under an oak tree that ended their teenage friendship. Ben’s grandmother Dorothy then calls from an unlicensed stakeout with her friend Bernie, prompting Ben to take Cybil to an abandoned farmhouse on Highway 39.
There, FBI SAC Katherine Scott, Agent Ruby Knight, and SNAP’s Athena reveal that both agencies are now coordinating. They explain that Aurelite-X is an unmonitored super-mineral found in Brazil that withstands extreme heat and energy, making it valuable for hypersonic missiles and stealth drones.
Ramirez plans a live dark-web auction of the mineral to international buyers, including former Russian KGB operative Milosh Kamarov and black-market facilitator Samuel Baird.
The joint task force builds a plan around a “PhantomKey” proximity brooch designed to clone Ramirez’s laptop credentials. At an unfinished construction site, Ramirez gathers Edmond, Sebastian, Cybil, and Ben and announces that a traitor is among them.
Cybil double-bluffs, accusing Ben of being the traitor who set her up. Under pressure, Ben logs into Ramirez’s laptop and finds unauthorized crypto transactions made with Sebastian Edmond’s credentials.
A fight breaks out. Earl Edmond strikes Ramirez with a metal pipe to protect his son, and Ramirez’s gun skids across the concrete.
Cybil grabs the weapon and shoots Ben in the upper left arm, deliberately clipping him to hold her cover and keep him away from Ramirez’s henchmen. She then fires at a crane pulley, dropping steel framing bars onto Rook.
Ramirez tries to flee with his laptop to keep the auction running. Ben tracks him down and knocks him out with a shovel, while the PhantomKey clones the laptop directories, shutting down the auction and identifying every bidder for federal prosecution.
Ramirez, Rook, and their syndicate are arrested on federal charges, and Earl and Sebastian Edmond cooperate as state witnesses. Using financial logs recovered by SAC Scott, Ben gives Cybil the location and evidence tied to Celeste Harlowe.
A month later, Cybil passes her LSATs and attends the Solace Summit Gala with Ben. They arrive as official romantic partners and covert allies, ready to apprehend Celeste Harlowe together.
