Look What the Cat Dragged In Summary: Demon Cat Horror

Introduction

A historic blizzard, an open kitchen window, and a missing rescue cat set Jason Rekulak’s Look What the Cat Dragged In in motion.

The novel follows Penny Padgett, a Philadelphia cartoonist whose hit series stars her real-life calico, Popcorn.

When a wealthy client asks Penny to foster an unusually large black cat named Godfrey, the arrangement looks like a simple favor.

What the novel builds from there is a mix of supernatural horror, occult suspense, and dark comedy.

TL;DR: A Foster Cat With a Hidden Passenger

Look What the Cat Dragged In is a fast-paced horror-comedy about grief, gaslighting, and a demonic transfer ritual.

Penny Padgett loses her beloved cat Popcorn during a blizzard, then agrees to foster a strange black cat named Godfrey for a client.

Godfrey is the host vessel for an ancient demon called Abraxas, and a secret coven wants to move the entity into Penny’s body.

Key elements include:

  • A boyfriend who is not who he claims to be
  • A hidden basement chapel and a 19th-century occult legacy
  • A climax where both cats turn the ritual against the demon

The result is a genre-blending thriller about manipulation, animal loyalty, and escape from coercive control.

Look What the Cat Dragged In Summary

Spoiler warning: this section reveals major plot points and the ending.

Penny Padgett burns a bagel, cracks a kitchen window, and leaves for groceries as a blizzard bears down on South Philadelphia. When she returns, the window is open and her rescue calico Popcorn is gone.

Her best friend Margo Minetti, Margo’s grandmother Angie, and ex-boyfriend Greg Foley join the search. Penny’s boyfriend Dean Everhardt arrives late from a business trip and comforts her as weeks pass without a trace of Popcorn.

Penny sinks into depression and stops drawing. Her editor Tarquin rejects a bleak grief memoir and insists Popcorn stay alive in the comics, extending her deadline instead.

Dean persuades Penny to attend a Vernal Equinox gala at Godfrey Hall, the Brandywine Valley estate of his richest client, Evelyn Bruehl. There Penny meets Godfrey, a muscular black cat, and agrees to foster him for two months.

The cat arrives with Dr. Horace Bellamy, a condescending old veterinarian, and his assistant Tamir. They leave behind a cooler of unlabeled raw meat and a set of strange instructions.

Godfrey stares at Penny through the shower glass and displays abnormal strength. She begins drawing in sudden bursts, then suffers acne, night sweats, weight loss, bedwetting, and long blackouts.

Beetles and centipedes swarm the litter box, and horn music echoes through the floorboards at night. Dean insists the sound comes from their half-deaf neighbor, Mrs. Mendoza.

Mrs. Mendoza is murdered, and Penny watches Godfrey drag a ten-foot bloody cord through the pet door and swallow it whole. Greg inspects a hidden sigil on the cat and loses sight in one eye.

Dean secretly spikes Penny’s wine with a drug called Trimaxil, keeping her in a week-long trance. She unconsciously emails Tarquin a 100-page occult manuscript.

When she wakes, Penny finds Margo’s missing EpiPen under her bed and realizes Dean staged Popcorn’s escape during the blizzard. She flees and discovers a secret chapel behind the basement shelves, where Tamir has been held to play the horn.

Dean drops his disguise: he is Chester Durham, a 53-year-old failed vitamin salesman given youth and wealth by the Abraxas coven. The coven abducts Penny for palingenesis, a ritual to transfer the demon from Godfrey into her body.

Margo, Angie, and Greg track Penny to Godfrey Hall and are captured. At a limestone quarry, Dr. Bellamy cuts the demon from Godfrey’s flank and Dean brings out Popcorn as the sacrifice.

Touching Popcorn restores Penny’s real memories and breaks the demon’s control. She cuts the leash, and the two cats scale a tree and tear Abraxas in half.

The coven’s stolen youth reverses instantly: Chester ages, Evelyn goes blind and toothless, and Dr. Bellamy crumbles into bones. Laszlo, Greg’s landlord, rescues the group in his van, and Penny cracks a crowbar across Chester’s arm as he reaches for Popcorn.

Six weeks later, Penny lives near the Philadelphia Museum of Art with both Popcorn and the reformed Godfrey. Greg starts vet school, and the novel ends with Penny and Greg walking home through December snow.
