She learns to paint with stolen materials and eventually earns the Dahl Fellowship for technology art at the Berkshire College of Art and Design.
On campus she feels out of place among wealthy enclave heirs. She becomes fixated on Mathilde Wojnot-Cho, a reclusive classmate whose grasp of art theory outpaces everyone around her.
After finding Mathilde crying and covered in wood splinters in a bathroom stall, Enka begins a daily ritual of pressing her palm against the small window of Mathilde’s studio door. The handprint becomes the foundation of a codependent friendship.
At the Freshman Exhibit, Mathilde wins top honors for an installation recreating the cabin of a plane carrying loan artifacts from 9/11, along with a carved wooden sculpture of her late father playing his final voicemail.
Mathilde then falls into severe depression. Enka moves into her room, feeds her, answers gallery emails, and nurses her back to health. The two share food, clothing, beds, and ideas.
Enka struggles in her own critiques, repeatedly told her work is derivative, and privately envies Mathilde’s unstudied instincts.
The Stochastic Archive Changes the Field
In their sophomore year, Professor Thomasina announces the Caltech Stochastic Archive, an open-source generative program that instantly creates and copyrights visual art from simple prompts.
The program makes Enka’s project of umbilical cords built from abandoned Game Boys and Tamagotchis instantly derivative and legally risky. She withdraws from the exhibit in shame.
Mathilde pivots to non-permanent conceptual work rooted in mono no aware. She installs twenty stolen Bibles in Perspex grids populated by silverfish at the Whitney Museum, letting the insects consume the scripture pages over time.
Mathilde represents America at the Venice Biennale with He Is Risen and Umbilical. Both works draw on ideas Enka had explored earlier, deepening her bitterness.
Pathway Labs and Argentina
Enka contacts Pathway Labs after seeing Mathilde express interest in the company. Its owner is Logan Dahl, son of billionaire Richard Dahl and neurobiologist Monika Dahl, the family funding Enka’s scholarship.
In Argentina, Logan introduces Enka to the SCAFFOLD, a neural bridge designed to connect two brains so one person can experience another’s memories or absorb their trauma. A sheep-to-human trial ends with the subject in a coma.
To divert the scandal, Logan invites Enka to curate Neon Séance at the Gagosian, displaying electrically stimulated neural pathways of preserved famous brains. The exhibit succeeds, lifting Enka to enclave status and a residency at Pathway Labs.
Enka and Logan begin dating, and he proposes in front of a commissioned Demuel Steiner painting.
Immaculate Conception and the Desert
Enka stops making art and settles into wedding planning and the Upper East Side Dahl estate, hidden behind a private holographic buffer projecting a fake vacant lot.

Inhabiting Mathilde
Media helicopters catch Mathilde emerging naked from the smoke, turning her breakdown into an acclaimed performance called Penance. Her foundation board, led by Monika Dahl, places her under a legal conservatorship.
When brain scans show Mathilde’s creative capacity stagnating, the board prepares to remove her memories of Beatrice digitally. Enka volunteers as Mathilde’s SCAFFOLD partner to prevent the erasure.
Enka receives a transcranial headband linked to a pairing chip in Mathilde’s temple. By imagining catching a ball that turns into a sparrow, she can inhabit Mathilde’s consciousness.
What begins as absorbing trauma becomes intoxication. Enka starts producing major work credited to Mathilde’s foundation, including Absolution at MoMA, which brings Father Patrick to sit silently on stage for 500 hours of public repentance.
Mathilde confronts Enka for invading her childhood trauma without consent. Enka ignores her and uses Monika’s conservatorship authority to override her boundaries, inhabiting Mathilde’s mind almost continuously.
The Clone Revelation
Enka’s marriage deteriorates. During sex with Logan while inhabiting Mathilde’s mind, Logan senses a foreign presence and confronts her in horror.
During the argument, Enka reveals what Toru Nakajima told her: Logan is not a natural human but a genetic clone of his father, Richard Dahl, created as the prototype for Project Naiad.
Logan breaks down. He drives to the Dahlhouse compound, attacks staff, smashes genetic databases, burns museum art, and manually desynchronizes the SCAFFOLD link.
The desynchronization sends electrical shocks through Enka’s brain, damages Mathilde’s pairing device, and causes the metal chip in Mathilde’s temple to corrode and overheat.
Dahl Corp wipes Logan’s mind and replaces him with a previous clone backup. The new Logan believes he simply overworked himself and apologizes to Enka. Mathilde suffers permanent brain damage and falls into a nonverbal state of cognitive decline.
The Confession and the Ending
Ten years pass. Mathilde lives as a nonverbal invalid on the fifth floor of Enka and Logan’s home, cared for by nurses. Enka suffers chronic migraines from feedback from the dead SCAFFOLD wire in her head.
Inhabiting Mathilde’s mind one final time, Enka hears Mathilde’s inner voice tell her: “I loved you. So much, Enka. And I love you, still.”
Enka attends the opening gala for Born Again, an exhibit compiled from ten years of footage documenting Mathilde’s mental decay. She steps on stage and confesses to the assembled art world that she sabotaged Mathilde’s tests, stole her genius, and invaded her mind.
She withdraws from the art industry. An activist movement, #FreeMathilde, dismantles Dahl Corp’s commercial SCAFFOLD initiatives.
Five years later, at her 45th birthday party, Enka teaches beginner art classes at a community college. Logan works as a carpenter, and her sons are grown. She has had the SCAFFOLD headband permanently removed, leaving a temple scar.
Upstairs, a maid interrupts the party to report that Mathilde has asked for a pen and paper and, for the first time in over a decade, has begun to draw again.
