Reap & Sow Summary: Demonic Pacts and Dark Fantasy

Reap & Sow: A Shop, a Cellar, and a Debt That Never Dies

Behind the counter of Shaws’ Antiques & Curiosities in Blackbridge, twenty-year-old Eda Shaw greets customers who may want a dusty clock or a decade of their own life traded away.

Charlotte B. Plumb’s Reap & Sow opens on that double trade: an old family shop above, and a black obsidian Gateway to the Otherworld sealed in the cellar below.

The novel is a dark, gothic romantic fantasy set in a canal-cut city ruled by a strict religious order. Eda’s family owes a demon a fortune in human years, and the harvest deadline is close.

TL;DR: The Short Version of Reap & Sow

Eda Shaw and her two brothers inherited a 1,000-year debt from their father, who bargained with the demon archduke Mr. Night to bring his dead wife back. Each autumn, the siblings must deliver fifty human years to him or die.

  • The setup: The Shaws run an antiques shop that hides a Gateway to Infernus, quietly brokering soul-pacts for desperate customers.
  • The complication: Bishop Florian Fane arrives from the capital to purge demonology, arrests both brothers, and cuts his own secret deal with Mr. Night.
  • The gamble: Eda barters fifty years of her own lifespan to Kit’rath, a shape-shifting demon and Mr. Night’s estranged brother, for help.
  • The stakes: A corrupt church, a crime lord’s hidden Gateway, and a public reckoning at the Clerics’ Conclave.

Reap & Sow Summary: The Full Story (Spoilers Ahead)

Twenty years before the story begins, Oswin Shaw watched his wife Emmeline die in childbirth. Grieving, he found an obsidian Gateway and struck a Pact with the archduke demon Mr. Night, whose true name is Baelion Ansellis.

Emmeline returned as a hollow shell and later took her own life. Oswin was left owing 1,000 human years, and when he died, his three children became guarantors of that debt.

Eda, Benjamin, and Lawrence now owe Mr. Night fifty years every autumn harvest. Miss the deadline and they die. As Reap & Sow opens, they are ten years short with three weeks to go.

Eda closes a Pact with a nervous nobleman named Bartholomew, who surrenders twenty years. Then Bishop Florian Fane arrives in Blackbridge with the Order of the Blade, publicly vowing to destroy every soul broker in the city.

Ben wants the family to lie low. Eda knows that hiding means a missed deadline and three corpses.

She slips out to a tavern in Gaffham to find a final customer and recruits a broke gambler called Gregory. Gregory is an undercover Blade.

Knights surround the shop. Ben kills a Blade defending Eda, and Bishop Fane and Commander Martine Tenelle take both brothers to Fell Keep.

In the cellar, Fane makes his own arrangement with Mr. Night. He will keep the Shaw brothers locked up past the deadline, hand the Gateway to the bishop, and deliver thousands of years through a mass congregation. Eda escapes through a sewer grate.

Beneath the city, crime lord Severin Lich’s men seize her and demand information about the Gateway. She gets free and goes looking for the one creature who might match Mr. Night.

Kit’rath Ansellis, called Kit, is Baelion’s younger brother. He fled Infernus twenty years earlier and now lives in a Cannington apartment funded by High Governor Abelard Wolfram.

Eda offers Kit a formal Pact: fifty years of her own lifespan for his protection, his help breaking her brothers out of Fell Keep, and a Gateway. Kit accepts.

He takes her downriver to Robin, an alchemist and riverfolk witch who lives aboard the barge Oriana. Robin weaves Eda a Mantle of Concealment, a cloak that makes the wearer unremarkable to any eye.

Meanwhile, Fane releases feral fiends across Blackbridge. The massacres are staged to frame Eda and to cast the bishop as the city’s only protector.

Wearing the mantle and guided by Kit and his imp familiar Tripp, Eda enters Fell Keep during a public rally. They break Ben and Lawrie out of the dungeons, but a fiend bites Lawrie’s leg and poisons him.

Inside the Great Templehouse, Eda watches Fane conduct a mass bloodletting disguised as a blessing. Hundreds of citizens sign away their lifespans to Baelion without understanding what they signed.

The group retreats to the Embel Morrowstones so Robin can treat Lawrie. Ben is furious to learn his sister sold fifty years of her life, and Eda refuses to apologize for it.

Eda realises High Governor Wolfram and Commander Tenelle can be turned against Fane. She and Ben locate Severin Lich’s hidden Gateway in a Botanic Gardens mausoleum and destroy it with silver-alloy Breakers.

On the day of the Clerics’ Conclave, which falls on autumn harvest, Fane gathers the realm’s senior clerics to claim the title of Patriarch. Tenelle and Eda confront him in front of the congregation.

They expose his staged exorcisms and force him toward the Gateway. Fane hesitates, because destroying his master’s portal would break his own Pact, and Baelion manifests in fury.

A battle erupts between Baelion, the Order of the Blade, and Kit. Alchemists trap the archduke in a containment glyph while Ben and Eda smash his final Gateway with the Breakers, severing his link to Infernus.

Kit fights Baelion directly, and with Eda’s help he runs the archduke through with silver and takes his head. Charlotte B. Plumb ends the archduke’s reign on the templehouse floor.

With Baelion and Fane dead, Wolfram and Tenelle pardon the Shaw siblings. Tenelle still orders Kit out of Blackbridge by sundown.

Robin then offers the loophole that saves Eda’s life. Kit transfers Eda’s fifty years to Robin, who wants to pass on and join her late lover Oriana, and Eda kills Robin with her consent, legally returning the years to herself.

Lawrie recovers from his infection. Ben enlists in the Order of the Blade, and Lawrie takes over Shaws’ Antiques. Debt-free and whole, Eda leaves Blackbridge aboard the Oriana with Kit to hunt down every remaining Gateway.

Lines Worth Marking in Reap & Sow

“Whenever the shop bell chimed, Eda liked to guess: Had they come to trade with their coin or their soul?”

“You failed to specify where and how you wanted your precious gold, Mr. Night told him. Now leave this place before I gut you where you stand. Unless you wish to strike another bargain?”

“For the penniless in Blackbridge, there were only two choices: sell the body or sell the soul.”

“Dominor did not create demons. He was one, you fool. The first to ever find a way into the mortal world. He brought others, and your ancestors worshipped them as deities. Your Lordfather is the very thing you fear.”

“To err is human,” Kit murmured suddenly. She looked up. “Poetry?” “Mm. You mortals have a way with words.”

“The justice you seek is doled out by the powerful, and the powerful got where they were by looking out for themselves. You want to parry with the likes of them? Forget honor and mercy, for they’ll give you neither.”

“You play at being a man, but you will never know what it is to be mortal until you can face the inevitability of your own death,” she continued. “And that’s the irony, isn’t it? If you have nothing to live for, you’re dead already.”

“All is well, darling. I shall die richer than my brother could ever dream because someone will remember me with love.” His voice dropped to a murmur. “That’s something you cannot bargain for.”
