The Slumber Party and the Disappearance
During the summer before eighth grade, five friends gather in the renovated barn on Spencer’s family estate. Alison DiLaurentis controls the group, keeping them close by holding their secrets.
Alison tries to hypnotize the girls, and the night turns into an argument between her and Spencer. Spencer tells her to leave, and Alison walks out into the dark and vanishes.
No body is found. The four remaining girls carry guilt and one shared secret they call “The Jenna Thing,” a firecracker prank Alison planned that blinded their classmate Jenna Marshall.

Junior Year and the Arrival of “A”
Aria Montgomery returns to Rosewood after two years in Iceland. Before leaving, she had caught her father, Byron, kissing a twenty-year-old student named Meredith, and she kept it quiet at his request.
At a college bar called Snookers, Aria kisses a bookish older guy named Ezra. On the first day of school she learns he is Mr. Fitz, her new AP English teacher, and their connection continues anyway.

Spencer Hastings, an overachiever living in her sister Melissa’s shadow, feels an instant attraction to Melissa’s British fiancĆ©, Wren Kim. They kiss in the barn apartment, and Melissa walks in on them.

The Field Party and the Body in the Yard
At Noel Kahn’s annual field party, Hanna drinks, fights with Sean, and steals his father’s BMW. She races a silver Porsche and crashes into a telephone pole.
Aria and Ezra meet again at his apartment, but he finds “A”‘s texts on her phone and ends things in a panic. Spencer’s family turns on her after Melissa reveals the kiss with Wren.
Meanwhile, construction workers digging in the DiLaurentis backyard to build a tennis court find a body under the concrete slab of the gazebo. A Tiffany ring confirms the remains are Alison’s.
The case becomes a homicide investigation. Jenna Marshall, now blind and using a guide dog, and her stepbrother Toby Cavanaugh both attend the funeral.
The Ending
After Alison’s public funeral at Rosewood Abbey, detectives tell the girls they are reopening the murder case and will question everyone again. Aria, Emily, Hanna, and Spencer walk out together and reunite under a weeping willow.
All four phones chime at once with a single message: “I’m still here, bitches. And I know everything. āA.”
The epilogue is written from “A”‘s point of view. It confirms that “A” is not Alison, but a living stalker watching the girls and planning to keep punishing them.
