Arcana Academy Summary: A Descent into the Arcanum
SPOILERS AHEAD. This section recounts the full story, including the ending.
The narrative starts in Halazar Prison. Clara Graysword is interrogated by Prince Kaelis using the Nine of Swords card. The truth spell forces her to reveal her illegal inking and her sister Arina’s involvement.
Sentenced to death, Clara uses her forbidden skills to ink three makeshift cards with her own blood. She breaks out of the tower and swims the freezing Farlum River.
Kaelis recaptures her, but he does not return her to prison. He brings her to Arcana Academy. His real goal is to obtain “The World,” a mythical card that can reshape reality.
He needs Clara’s unique ability to ink with any pigment. To hide her identity, he invents a persona for her: Clara Redwin, a deceased noble’s heir and his new fiancée.
Clara enters the academy and faces the Sanctum of the Chalice. Initiates must sacrifice a piece of their future to the magical Chalice.
Defiant, Clara throws away her Two of Cups card, killing any chance of a future with her first love, Liam. She passes the violent vision trial and becomes an initiate.
Life at the academy is a minefield. Clara clashes with her roommate, Alor Ventall, and is tormented by a Major Arcana student named Eza.
During an attack, Kaelis reveals a secret: Clara is the Wheel of Fortune, one of the twenty Major Arcana. She meets the other Majors, including Silas, the Chariot, who can teleport.
Clara uses Silas to return to Eclipse City. The Starcrossed Club, her old home, is burned down, but she finds her found family alive. They tell her Arina is likely dead in a mill explosion. Clara refuses to believe it. She returns to the academy to continue her mission, agreeing to help Kaelis forge the king’s cards.
On All Coins Day, Clara and her crew execute a heist. They swap King Naethor’s real cards for forgeries. Clara secretly keeps the real Death card to stop Kaelis from summoning the World.
During the final wielding trial, she defeats Eza in a duel. When Eza tries to kill her afterward, Emilia Ventall, the King of Swords, stabs him to death.
Clara and Kaelis consummate their passion. But at the Feast of Cups, Warden Glavstone and Prince Ravin expose Clara’s true identity. Clara flees to the townhome, but Ravin—revealed to be the Major Arcana of Death—follows.
In a brutal attack, he murders Bristara and Silas.
Clara is captured and beaten. She is sent back to Halazar Prison, this time to the deepest, lightless dungeons. The final reveal shows Prince Ravin placing her in a cell next to her sister, Arina, who is still alive.
