Nocticadia Summary: A Descent into Dracadia’s Shadows
Spoiler Warning: This section recounts the full narrative, including the ending.
The story begins with a historical prologue set in 1753, where Commodore Lord Adderly discovers Dracadia Island in ruins.
A dying acolyte mentions “black worms” before the crew faces a fiery fate. The modern narrative introduces Lilia Vespertine, who works a difficult job to fund her sister Bee’s boarding school.
Four years earlier, she witnessed her mother Francesca die in a bathtub, with black worms spilling from her mouth. The death was ruled a suicide.
Lilia writes a paper on her mother’s illness for a microbiology class. Her professor, Albert Wilkins, submits it to Dracadia University. Lilia receives an unexpected full-ride scholarship.
She arrives at Dracadia and enrolls in a Neuroparasitology course taught by Professor Devryck Bramwell, known as “Doctor Death.” She also joins the Midnight Lab to study the Sominyx moth.
At a university gala, Spencer Lippincott drugs Lilia with hallucinogens. Devryck finds her and takes her to his private laboratory. He tethers her to a bed to prevent sleepwalking.
When Lilia wakes, she blackmails Devryck into making her his lab assistant. She wants access to his research to solve her mother’s death. Devryck suffers from Voneric’s Disease.
He injects himself with Noctisoma toxin to feel warmth. He has been keeping a child abuser locked in his dungeon to harvest the toxin.
As they work together, a sexual relationship begins. Lilia’s friends, Briceson Williams and Melisandre, run a blog exposing university secrets. They show Lilia files on “The Crixson Project.” This was a clinical trial led by Devryck’s father. It resulted in six women drowning. Lilia discovers her mother, Francesca, was actually Vanessa Corbin, a participant in the trial.
Professor Gilchrist blackmails Lilia to reveal the blog members. Gilchrist tells Lilia that Provost Lippincott is her biological father. Lilia is expelled. Back home, a criminal named Angelo DeLuca attacks her. He carves her face.
Devryck’s twin brother, Caedmon, believed dead, rescues Lilia. Caedmon tortures and mutilates Angelo. The brothers reunite. Devryck confronts Provost Lippincott.
It is revealed Lippincott sabotaged the Crixson Project and murdered a student. The secret society, the Seven Rook Society, captures Lilia.
Devryck saves her by revealing her scientific discovery. Lilia is inducted into the society and branded. She is reinstated at the university.
In the final scene, Lilia’s sister Bee arrives for Christmas.
She shows Lilia a photo of her new teacher, Mr. Caed. Lilia recognizes him as Caedmon.
The cycle of obsession continues.
