⚠️ Spoiler Warning

Part I: Sparks Fly Upward

Chapter 1: The Portal

Clary prepares to travel to Idris to find a warlock who can wake her mother from a magical coma. Jace forbids her from coming, insisting it’s too dangerous, while Maryse claims the Clave wants to meet her.

When the Institute is attacked by Forsaken warriors, Magnus opens a Portal to Idris and Simon is stabbed during the chaos.

Jace drags the wounded Simon through the Portal to save his life, violating Shadowhunter law and setting everything in motion.

Key Moment: The Institute is attacked by Forsaken in daylight, forcing Jace to bring Simon into Idris.

Chapter 2: The Demon Towers of Alicante

Clary arrives at the Institute to find everyone already Portaled to Idris and Madeleine killed in the attack.

Desperate to save her mother, she creates her own Portal rune on the cathedral wall. Luke catches her as she enters, and both are pulled through by Idris’s wards.

Simon wakes in Alicante with Isabelle watching over him, while Jace explains that bringing a vampire into the city is illegal. They can see the crystal demon towers that protect the city from all demon entry.

Key Moment: Clary creates her own Portal and accidentally drags Luke through it.

Chapter 3: Amatis

Luke rescues Clary from Lake Lyn, where the poisoned water causes vivid hallucinations. Luke reveals the water gives “true visions” to those who drink it.

They reach the house of Amatis Herondale, Luke’s sister whom he hasn’t seen in fifteen years, and she agrees to help when she learns Clary is Jocelyn’s daughter.

In the Penhallow house, Simon meets Sebastian Verlac and Aline Penhallow. When Sebastian mentions Jace’s sister, Jace reacts with explosive rage.

Key Moment: Clary drinks the poisoned water of Lake Lyn and suffers dangerous hallucinations.

Chapter 4: Daylighter

Alec escorts Simon to the Gard, where the charming Inquisitor Aldertree takes him into an interrogation room.

Back at Amatis’s house, Luke reveals he is Clary’s godfather and has a sister. Aldertree manipulates Simon, demanding he confess that the Lightwoods are Valentine’s spies, but Simon refuses to betray Jace.

Aldertree has Simon thrown into a dark rune-covered cell where a hoarse voice warns him that the Clave makes people disappear.

Key Moment: Inquisitor Aldertree imprisons Simon to frame the Lightwoods as traitors.

Clary wakes healthy and Amatis shares her tragic history as Stephen Herondale’s first wife, whom Valentine forced to divorce.

Despite warnings that she cannot leave, Clary escapes by climbing down a rose trellis in stolen Shadowhunter gear. She becomes lost in the city but eventually finds the Penhallow house, where Isabelle opens the door in shock.

Key Moment: Clary ignores warnings and sneaks out to find Jace in Shadowhunter gear.

Chapter 6: Bad Blood

Clary finds Jace locked in an embrace with Aline Penhallow, devastating her. Jace reacts with cold fury and tells Clary she is a “disaster” who will never belong in their world. His cruelty is calculated to drive her away.

Meanwhile, Samuel reveals to Simon that Aldertree harbors a vendetta against the Lightwoods rooted in childhood jealousy.

Jace punches a window in rage and tells Alec he is breaking Simon out of jail.

Key Moment: Jace verbally destroys Clary to force her away for her safety.

Chapter 7: Where Angels Fear to Tread

Jace arrives outside Simon’s cell window attempting a rescue, but Simon refuses to leave, convinced it will doom the Lightwoods. Sebastian finds Clary and offers to take her to Ragnor Fell on a horse named Wayfarer.

They reach a hidden cottage where Magnus reveals that Ragnor Fell was murdered by Valentine’s servants before they could reach him.

Magnus unfreezes Sebastian and explains that the Book of the White contains the antidote for Jocelyn’s coma, hidden in the Wayland manor.

Key Moment: Magnus reveals that Ragnor Fell was murdered by Valentine’s spies.

Chapter 8: One of the Living

Magnus tells Clary the book is hidden inside a cookbook titled Simple Recipes for Housewives and only Jace can enter the manor.

Clary confronts Jace at Amatis’s house, throwing plates in rage. Jace shows her the scar where Simon drank his blood, proving he cares despite his cruel words. He agrees to take her to the Wayland manor.

Key Moment: Sebastian kisses Clary, triggering visceral horror in her.

Chapter 9: This Guilty Blood

Clary and Jace find the Book of the White in the cookbook at the Wayland manor.

A hidden mechanism reveals a cellar filled with bones from Valentine’s experiments and a mutilated angel named Ithuriel, bound by torturous runes. Ithuriel shows them visions of Valentine using demon blood on Jocelyn’s first child and angel blood on Jace.

Clary rewrites the runes to free Ithuriel, who stabs himself to end his suffering and the manor collapses. As they escape, Jace is convinced he has demon blood. Walking back to the city, they see Alicante suddenly erupt in fire as demons attack.

Key Moment: Jace and Clary free the angel Ithuriel, revealing Valentine’s blood experiments.

Clary remembers Ithuriel’s vision of a knot that crystalizes into meaning—an “Alliance” rune binding Shadowhunters and Downworlders. She returns to the Hall and demonstrates her power by drawing a rune that shows everyone their loved ones.

The Clave, moved and desperate, agrees to the Alliance and cooperation with Downworlders.

Key Moment: Clary proposes the Alliance rune and convinces the Clave to accept it.

While Valentine performs final incantations, Clary crawls to the altar and rewrites the summoning runes in the sand.

The Angel Raziel rises from Lake Lyn with golden wings covered in eyes. Valentine demands the Angel destroy all Shadowhunters who refuse him, but Raziel judges him as a selfish man unworthy of the Angel’s service.

Raziel reveals Clary is the true summoner because she rewrote her name into the runes.

The Angel executes Valentine with white fire and grants Clary one wish. She chooses to resurrect Jace, who returns fully alive. They realize they are not siblings and share overwhelming joy.
