⚠️ Spoiler Warning: This section contains detailed, chapter-by-chapter plot summaries.

Chapter 1: The Climb

Saeris is caught stealing iron in Zilvaren’s elite Hub district. She lies to a golden-armored guardian, claiming to be from the plague-ridden Third Ward, which causes him to drop his gauntlet in fear.

Saeris seizes the opportunity, snatching the valuable gold gauntlet and scaling a massive wall to escape.

During her desperate climb, she feels the metal “whispering” to her, offering the first hint of her latent, unusual power.

Chapter 2: Glassmaker

Saeris takes the gauntlet to her mentor, Elroy, who is terrified of the royal repercussions. He reveals he loved her murdered mother and warns that the guards will flay them for the theft.

Determined to use the gold for her brother Hayden, Saeris refuses to return it.

She finds Hayden beaten at a tavern by the smuggler Carrion Swift and confronts him to retrieve Hayden’s stolen belongings.

Chapter 3: The Kindest Purpose

Saeris searches for Hayden, who has taken the stolen gauntlet and disappeared. She discovers the Third Ward is swarming with guardians.

Hayden is cornered by guards and claims he stole the armor to protect Saeris.

She intervenes, engaging three guardians in a lethal fight and killing two with unexpected skill before being restrained by Captain Harron.

Chapter 4: The Price

Saeris is imprisoned in Queen Madra’s palace for six hours.

Captain Harron escorts her to an audience in the Hall of Mirrors.

Queen Madra, ancient and malicious despite her youthful appearance, accuses Saeris of being a Fae-trained assassin. Madra orders Saeris’s execution and promises to burn the entire Third Ward as a punitive lesson.

Chapter 5: Heretic

Harron stabs Saeris to provide Madra with the “music” of her screams.

In her agony, Saeris’s magic awakens, liquefying Harron’s dagger into quicksilver. She stumbles toward an ancient sword, Solace, buried in the floor and draws it, releasing a pool of silver.

A massive Fae warrior, Kingfisher, emerges, places a protective pendant on her, and carries her into the quicksilver as she loses consciousness.

Chapter 6: Everlayne

Saeris wakes ten days later, fully healed, in the Winter Palace of Yvelia. She meets Everlayne, a Fae woman who has been caring for her.

Saeris struggles to accept that Fae and magic are real, having believed them to be myths. A warrior named Renfis arrives to reclaim Kingfisher’s pendant, noting the warrior is struggling without it.

Chapter 7: The Dog

Everlayne prepares Saeris to meet King Belikon De Barra. In the Grand Hall, Saeris sees the skull of the last dragon. King Belikon informs her she is now his subject and must reopen the quicksilver portals.

Kingfisher is dragged in, sentenced to train Saeris, and then banished back to the war front.

Chapter 8: Alchemist

Saeris meets the librarian Rusarius, who identifies her as an Alchemist. Kingfisher joins them, hostile and armored.

He reveals Queen Madra has likely conscripted Hayden and the humans into an army.

Saeris admits she has channeled metal energy before, confirming her potential, and Kingfisher agrees to take her to a forge to begin training.

Chapter 9: Righteous Purpose

Kingfisher takes Saeris to a ruined forge, mocking her human weakness.

He reveals Fae once hunted humans for blood and that quicksilver is sentient and deadly without a protective relic.

He gives her his pendant to practice safely and cleans the forge with shadow magic, admitting the manual labor was only a test.

Chapter 10: Crumbs

Saeris and Everlayne spend time in the library, where Saeris learns the Fae language is the source of human speech.

She discovers Everlayne is nearly 1,500 years old.

Kingfisher interrupts and takes Saeris back to the forge, forcing her to hold a drop of quicksilver until she hears its voices. In response to the ordeal, she punches him in the face.

Chapter 11: Swallow

Everlayne scolds Saeris for punching Kingfisher, a “blooded warrior.”

Saeris learns Kingfisher is Everlayne’s half-brother, hated by Belikon. Kingfisher enters Saeris’s room to eat breakfast, making suggestive remarks about her scent and leading to a tense, charged moment between them.

Chapter 12: Fox

In the forge, Kingfisher fails to bind Fae bone to quicksilver.

A fox bites Saeris in the hearth before she can tame it. Kingfisher magicks her into Fae leathers and challenges her to touch his pendant while he wears it, leading to their first intense kiss.

Saeris becomes overwhelmed and flees when he warns her about his intense desires.

Chapter 13: Duress

Saeris attempts to escape the palace with the fox, Onyx. She follows quicksilver whispers to the catacombs and awakens a pool. Kingfisher catches her, preventing her from stepping into the deadly pool.

They make a blood oath: he will rescue Hayden if she helps forge relics.

Kingfisher returns through the portal but has accidentally captured Carrion Swift instead of Hayden.

Chapter 14: The Fine Print

Saeris is furious Kingfisher brought Carrion.

He reveals he fought fifty guards and was stabbed seven times trying to reach Hayden. He uses the blood oath to compel Saeris to follow him as they flee the palace for Cahlish, his ancestral home. Carrion remains unconscious as they depart into the snowy night.

Chapter 15: Sarrush

Riding to Cahlish, they pass through a forest filled with ghostly “shades.” Kingfisher taunts Saeris about their kiss. At a border tavern, local Fae recognize Kingfisher with awe, kneel, and call him the Dragon’s Bane.

Kingfisher is visibly distressed by the adoration and flees the scene.

Chapter 16: Shadow Gate

Kingfisher opens a shadow gate portal. Renfis explains Belikon is a usurper. Saeris is forced by her oath to step through, experiencing extreme disorientation.

She realizes Kingfisher’s mind is fractured from quicksilver exposure. She wakes in Cahlish and is relieved to learn from Carrion that Hayden is alive and safe.

Chapter 17: Cahlish

Saeris explores the beautiful Cahlish estate. She meets Archer, a fire sprite who helped raise Kingfisher. Kingfisher reveals he is using her as a “bargaining chip” for his freedom.

He presents her with a trunk containing 15,000 Fae rings and tells her she must turn every one into a relic before she can go home.

Chapter 18: Crucible

Saeris begins experimenting with silver transmutation but faces repeated failures. She finds a tiny amount of quicksilver that speaks to her. Renfis visits, covered in vampire blood, and warns the war is going poorly.

He asks Saeris to have dinner with Fisher to help humanize her in his eyes.

Chapter 19: Bones and All

A dinner is interrupted when vampires smash through the windows. Saeris fights for her life, witnessing the monsters’ horrific biology.

Kingfisher saves her, decapitating them with his sword. Saeris is poisoned by a scratch and passes out as Kingfisher carries her to safety, waking later in his bed at Cahlish.

Chapter 20: Ammontraíeth

Fisher compels Saeris to stay in his bed for five days to recover from the poison.

She grows frustrated, noticing his scent everywhere. Fisher returns from the war camp, Innìr, and reveals the enemy fortress is called Ammontraíeth.

He takes her to the camp, where she sees the charred wasteland across the river.

Chapter 21: Ice Breaker

The vampire horde, led by King Malcolm, attempts to cross the frozen river Darn. Fae warriors break the ice while Ren and Fisher use magic to repel them.

Malcolm taunts Fisher across the river, implying a history. Fisher uses shadow magic to drown hundreds of vampires, marking Malcolm’s ominous return to the battlefield.

Chapter 22: The Itch

Fisher takes Saeris back to his tent, forbidding her from sharing food with Carrion. They argue about Malcolm.

The sexual tension peaks, leading to an intense encounter where Fisher’s shadows envelop them and Saeris sees magical stars ignite on the ceiling.

Chapter 23: Ticking Clock

Saeris wakes to find Fisher’s magical ink left a bird tattoo on her chest. She reveals she was sterilized at fourteen by Zilvaren authorities. Fisher is shocked and saddened.

Saeris returns to the camp forge, fails more experiments, and becomes physically sick from the fumes.

Chapter 24: Lupo Proelia

Saeris is summoned to extract shards from a stone wall, realizing the sword contains quicksilver. Ren explains the Lupo Proelia are Fisher’s elite “wolves.”

Danya, a warrior, tries to attack Fisher, furious about the sword. Ren reveals the Fae have only one year left before Malcolm’s horde overruns them.

Chapter 25: Ballard

Fisher takes Saeris to the village of Ballard for a feast. Saeris meets peaceful Fae and sees how loved Fisher is. Fisher admits he feels he failed his people.

Saeris hears loud quicksilver voices. They find an apartment that belonged to Fisher’s mother, an Oracle.

Chapter 26: Ash and Cinders

Saeris wakes to Fisher screaming from a quicksilver-induced seizure. She holds him through the four-hour ordeal. She tells him about her mother’s execution, and he reveals his mother was also murdered.

They fall asleep together in a rare moment of peace and vulnerability.

Chapter 27: Marked

During another intimate encounter, Fisher reveals they share a rare mating bond, which he “accepted,” causing more tattoos to appear.

He is terrified for her, as mated pairs often face tragedy, and warns her his quicksilver madness is becoming incurable. He confesses he is in love with her.

Chapter 28: Just Ask

Carrion suggests Saeris simply “ask” the quicksilver to cooperate. In the map room, she communicates with the sentient metal.

It demands “music” and a “secret.” Saeris promises a song and reveals her secret: she wants to bring her brother and mentor to Yvelia. The quicksilver shards dislodge and go into her hand.

Chapter 29: Ballad of the Ajun Gate

Saeris reforges the shards into a new sword, Avisiéth.

Lorreth sings the “Ballad of Ajun Gate,” about Fisher killing the last dragon. The quicksilver consumes the song, erasing its memory from everyone but Saeris.

The sword ignites with holy light and chooses Lorreth as its master.

Chapter 30: Swear It

Renfis interrupts with news the horde is at the river again. Saeris refuses to stay behind and makes Fisher swear to trust her. Fisher gives her his father’s sword, Solace.

They arrive at the riverbank to find a breach in progress, with vampires crawling from the running water.

Chapter 31: The Darn

Saeris fights alongside Ren and Fisher at the river.

She decapitates vampires with Solace, realizing the sword is alive. Lorreth uses Avisiéth to incinerate dozens of vampires.

The victory is cut short when Malcolm appears on the other side with Everlayne, who wears an enthrallment collar.

Chapter 32: Taladaius

The vampire Taladaius holds Everlayne captive. Fisher is devastated to see his sister bitten and enthralled.

Taladaius states Malcolm wants Saeris, the Alchemist, in exchange for Everlayne’s life, giving them fifty-six hours before she dies. Malcolm is taking Everlayne north to Gillethrye.

Chapter 33: Blood in Thanks

The group returns to strategize, realizing they need a witch to break the enthrallment. Danya tries to take Avisiéth from Lorreth, and the sword disintegrates her hand in rejection.

Fisher, Ren, and Lorreth perform a blood ritual to thank Saeris for her bravery, with Fisher finally calling her by her real name.

Chapter 34: A Secret

Back at Cahlish, Danya mocks Saeris for sitting in the “Lady’s chair.” Fisher defends her, confirming their status. Saeris successfully creates the first relic ring by telling the quicksilver her secret about staying in Yvelia.

She overhears an explanation that their tattoos are “God Bindings” for true mates.

Chapter 35: Oracle

Saeris confronts Fisher about the hidden bond.

He explains “Oshellith” means “Most Sacred.” He reveals his mother’s prophecies predicted Saeris’s arrival and admits he intended to reject the bond to protect her.

Saeris refuses to let him give up and vows to save him and Everlayne.

Chapter 36: Iseabail

Fisher brings a witch, Iseabail, to help Everlayne.

The group prepares to travel to Gillethrye for what Ren warns is a likely suicide mission. Despite the danger, both Saeris and Carrion insist on coming to face Malcolm and rescue Everlayne.

Chapter 37: Much Sharper

Fisher and Saeris share their last night in Ballard. Fisher creates a room full of candles to simulate stars. They fully consummate their bond, and more tattoos appear on Fisher.

He admits he has loved her since she fell through the pool and that his mother called her a “meteorite” to guide him.

Chapter 38: Martyrs for Friends

Saeris wakes alone to find a shadow gate and a farewell letter from Fisher; he has gone to Gillethrye alone. Saeris rallies Ren, Lorreth, and Carrion to follow.

Carrion insists on a god-sword, so Saeris forges a new blade, Simon, for him before they jump through the gate.

Chapter 39: Annorath Mor!

The group falls eighty feet into a lake at Gillethrye, nearly drowning. They scale a massive obsidian cliff to reach an amphitheater.

They discover hundreds of thousands of charred, screaming Fae ghosts in the stands, the echoes of a past atrocity.

Chapter 40: Introductions

Malcolm, Belikon, and Queen Madra are revealed as a working Triumvirate.

They have captured and are torturing Fisher.

Madra reveals Belikon is her brother. Malcolm gloats that he lured Fisher to Gillethrye to break him once and for all, using the ghosts of the city he destroyed.

Chapter 41: Gillethrye

Fisher tells the true story: he was tricked by a rigged coin toss into burning Gillethrye to contain the horde.

He spent 110 years in a labyrinth searching for the original coin, only leaving when he felt Saeris wake the quicksilver. Fisher then draws Solace and stabs Belikon through the throat.

Chapter 42: That’ll Cost You

A massive melee breaks out. Saeris faces Captain Harron and snaps his neck, killing him.

The group flees into the labyrinth to escape, encountering a massive spider demon, Morthil. Saeris uses her Alchemist senses to navigate the shifting obsidian walls.

Chapter 43: Another Way

Saeris finds the magical coin inside the dead spider demon. Malcolm catches her, mortally wounding her by punching through her stomach.

Saeris flips the coin, breaking the 110-year-old deal. A holy wind releases the ghosts to their rest. With her last strength, Saeris beheads Malcolm with Solace.

Chapter 44: Axis

Dying, Saeris hears Zareth, the God of Chaos.

He offers her a choice: die in peace or stay with Fisher and face a dark future.

Zareth reveals he separated them to prevent them from becoming a universe-destroying “axis.” He offers to hide her from other gods if she becomes “something new.”

Chapter 45: Choose Wisely

Saeris wakes three days later in the vampire fortress, Ammontraíeth.

Taladaius reveals he transitioned her into a Fae-vampire hybrid to save her life, giving her pointed ears and sharp canines. Carrion is revealed as the true heir to the Yvelian throne.

Fisher informs Saeris that by killing Malcolm, she is now the Queen of Sanasroth.
