Dive Into theĀ Full Chapter-Level Book Breakdown
The novel opens with Fia trapped in a tower in Ravenfell, the capital of Umbrathia. She uses her mind-control power to manipulate Effie, a young Umbra soldier, and tries to escape.
However, Aether, a fearsome commander with golden eyes, intercepts her at the exit. He immobilizes her with a thought and throws her back into isolation.
Weeks pass in silence. Fia is eventually brought outside by Vexa, a blacksmith, where she meets a silver-winged creature called a Vƶrdr named Tryggar. The beast immediately bows to her, claiming her as its rider. This shocks the Umbra soldiers, as Vƶrdr do not bond with prisoners.
Fia is then taken through the streets of Ravenfell. Here, the author, Bree Grenwich, paints a stark picture of a dying civilization. The sky is an eternal twilight. The people are starving.
The land is ash and dust. It is here that Fia learns the horrifying truth: the prosperity of her home, SĆdhe, is powered by the stolen life-force of Umbrathia.
The Generals of the Umbra give Fia a choice. She must enter the Void, a realm of absolute darkness, to prove she is a true Duskbound. If she survives, she earns a seat at the political table. The trials are brutal. She is beaten by Commander Darius and forced to fight illusions of her loved ones.
Inside the Void, an ancient voice calls her Fiandrial. The voice reveals that her power has been “returned.” When Fia emerges, she is carrying Lael, a young candidate who had collapsed.
She is swathed in shadows.
This forces Aether to reveal the truth. Duskbound reveals that Fia is the daughter of Prince Andrial Valtýr. She is the lost princess of Umbrathia.
But the danger is not just political. A monstrous lord named Valkan Syrndore, leader of the Damphyres, becomes obsessed with Fia.
He uses his shapeshifting ability to disguise himself as Aether, capturing Fia and feeding on her essence in his castle. The real Aether arrives, shattering Valkan’s bones and exploding him into a spray of blood to save her.
Fia and Aether grow closer as they travel to find a source of arcanite. They fly to the ruins of Riftdremar, where Fia successfully imbues a massive wall of crystals with her self-sustaining light.
This act brings a spark of life back to the valley. The story concludes with Aether kneeling to Fia, swearing his life and shadows to her.
In her final vision, she sees the true enemy sitting on the throne of SĆdhe: Vilda Valtýr, the twin sister of the Queen.
