His assistant Celia and his brother Sebastian tell him his mother, Sabine, has reinstated “The Rites,” an archaic mating season for pureblood vampires.

In San Francisco, 22-year-old Thea Melbourne balances university cello studies, a diner job, and string quartet gigs to pay her mother’s cancer bills.

At a Herbst Theatre reception hosted by Sabine, Thea walks into a restroom and sees violist Carmen D’Alba being fed on by a red-eyed vampire.

Julian intervenes and compels Carmen to forget the attack. When he tries to compel Thea, his power fails on her. Intrigued, he walks her home, buys her a late-night meal, and proposes a deal.

Thea will pose as his girlfriend during the social season, and he will repair her cello and cover her debts.
