Spoilers Ahead

Exactly 364 days after a gymnasium fire at St Francis High School killed three students, seven teenagers arrive at the abandoned Motel Loba.

A charter bus driver named Benny drops them off, then an explosion destroys the bus. A pink anniversary card inside the reception office reads: “Happy 1st Anniversary. Only the truth will set you free.”

At midnight, every teenager receives a synchronized message through a hacked school app. The message states:

“KARL HUNT LIT THE MATCH, BUT YOU ARE ALL GUILTY.” It explains the rules of The Balloon Game: each hour, the group must vote to send the “guiltiest” person across a white line surrounding the motel. If no one crosses, the entire motel will detonate.

The next morning, Ellis Locke tries to hike out alone and a sniper fires warning shots at his feet. The group realizes they are trapped inside the perimeter. They compare invitations and discover none of them arrived by accident; each was manipulated to attend.

Only Ana Reyes came voluntarily, seeking an escape on the anniversary of her twin brother Danny’s death.

During the first countdown, Benny builds makeshift armor and volunteers to test the sniper. He sprints across the white line and is shot instantly. Two masked men in a red pickup truck collect his body, and a storage shed explodes when Caden and Ellis throw rocks at the truck. This proves the motel is rigged with explosives.

Ellis insists the group must actively vote people across the line to buy time. Ana argues for alternative solutions and code-names the mastermind “Norman” after Norman Bates. During the second hour, secrets about the fire begin to surface. Jade Clark confesses she filmed a viral video humiliating Karl Hunt naked in the locker room.

Alex Cabrera admits his dark song lyrics may have inspired Karl. Caden Loftus reveals he sold prescription pills to Karl before the game. Raya Mori recalls hanging out with Caden when Karl threatened to burn the school down, but she dismissed it as venting. Ana carries crushing guilt for directing Danny toward the locker room during the fire.

The first official vote ends in a tie between Caden and Alex. Ellis manipulates the situation and physically shoves Caden across the white line, where Caden is shot. Ana later finds Caden’s vote coaster and discovers he had written his own name, wanting to win. Under the bus, Ana also finds hidden red gas cans, proving “Norman” has been moving freely inside the line.

Ana, Raya, and Alex search the outbuildings for Norman’s hideout. Raya notices an air vent blowing cool air from underground. Ellis dismisses the discovery and demands another vote. Ana refuses to vote anyone else to die.

In a panic, Jax Patel tries to retrieve his phone near the white line to preserve his footage. He steps over and is shot instantly. Distraught, Jade breaks down.

Ellis zip-ties Raya’s hands, drags her outside, and uses a pulley system attached to a tractor wheel to drag her across the line. Raya is executed.

Meanwhile, Ana and Alex locate a metal hatch secured by an electronic keypad. Ana deduces the four-letter code by remembering the flickering road sign’s missing letters and guesses R O S A. The hatch unlocks. Before Ana can enter, Ellis attacks with a crowbar, but strong hands pull Ana down into safety.

Ana awakens inside an underground bunker stocked with supplies, video monitors, and a cork board displaying student photos around Karl Hunt. The mastermind appears wearing a white mask and an orange-and-grey striped polo shirt with the logo “HT”.

Ana identifies him as Matt Hunt, Karl Hunt’s father and owner of Hunt Tech.

Matt Hunt reveals the truth behind the operation. Benny and the two “cowboys” were hired actors. The rifle shots used high-tech blanks, paint bursts, and non-lethal impact charges.

None of the teenagers are actually dead; once dragged across the line, the cowboys transported them to a nearby vintage diner to recover.

Hunt explains his motive. Devastated by Karl’s death, he sought to clear his son’s memory from being labeled a suicidal mass murderer. By hacking into school psychologist Mr. Dankman’s confidential therapy records, Hunt uncovered the secrets and negligence of the seven students.

He created the Balloon Game to record video confessions from each teen acknowledging their role in the tragedy.

Hunt also reveals he left a $20 bill in Ellis’s card because he discovered a lawyer visited Ellis immediately after the fire. He knows Ellis harbors the ultimate secret. Before Hunt can extract Ana’s recorded confession, Ana smashes Hunt’s central control laptop with a free weight, destroying all saved video recordings.

Ana leaves Raya’s Zippo lighter on the desk, steals Karl’s photo, and escapes through a hidden crate ventilation tunnel. She runs back to the surface.

There, Ellis has captured Alex and tied him to the tractor pulley. Ana arrives holding a hidden metal bolt and records Ellis using her cell phone hidden in her waistband.

Boasting about his superiority, Ellis explicitly confesses on tape to shoving Caden, dragging Raya, and manipulating the votes. When Ellis tries to choke Ana, Alex tackles him. Ana then confronts Ellis with Matt Hunt’s investigation, forcing Ellis to confess his true secret on camera.

On the night of the fire, terrified of losing a crucial basketball game in front of college scouts and his cold father, Ellis paid Karl Hunt $20 to ignite a small trash fire to trigger the sprinklers and cancel the game.

Karl had not intended to destroy the school or commit suicide; it was a $20 bribe gone horribly wrong.

Ana forgives a weeping Ellis. Choosing dignity over Ellis’s game, Ana and Alex hold hands and deliberately walk across the white line together.

The cowboys fire non-lethal rounds and carry them away to the diner.

Left alone as the sole “survivor,” Ellis walks down the desert road, planning to fabricate a story framing Ana for everything.

He enters the brightly lit diner, only to stand paralyzed in shock as he finds all six classmates alive and waiting for him. Ana plays the video recording of Ellis’s confession aloud to the group.

Disgusted, the group banishes Ellis from the diner into the desert night. Ana follows Ellis outside to a gas pump and lightheartedly tosses him her phone containing the confession video alongside the $20 bill.

She gives him the choice to face accountability or run. Ellis leaves the phone and bill on the concrete and disappears into the darkness.

At dawn, emergency services and police arrive at the diner following an anonymous tip. Ana hands the police an evidence packet containing Matt Hunt’s fingerprints on Karl’s photo, the “HT” pen, and photos of the underground bunker. The police launch a massive manhunt for Matt Hunt, while the motel burns to the ground.

Sitting on the concrete forecourt with Alex and Raya as the morning sun rises over the mountains, Ana feels the lingering weight of guilt lift. She senses her twin brother Danny’s presence at last, finally ready to heal and return home.
