The book opens in Los Angeles, where Bex Daniels misses her flight to London. A night of drinking with her ex-hookup Brian ends with him hiding her passport.
Her father Rick, stepmother Jessie, and stepsister Bronwyn board a New Jersey Transit commuter train without her. The train crashes and kills thirty-one passengers, including all three of them.
Bex is left with the knowledge that her worst habit is the reason she is alive. At the triple funeral in New Jersey, she wanders the cemetery and approaches a well-dressed stranger, asking whether he smokes or wants to try heroin.
She then kisses him. He turns out to be Theodore “Theo” Porter, her father’s 36-year-old British business partner.
