Her editor and best friend, Cecelia “Cece” Sinclair, adds her as a last-minute panelist at “The State of the Black Author” event at the Brooklyn Museum. Shane Hall, a reclusive National Book Award winner, walks into the auditorium unannounced.
Onstage, Eva criticizes Shane for romanticizing female self-harm in his novels. Shane responds by defending Eva’s writing in detail, revealing he has read every book in her Cursed series. The audience notices the tension between them.
It becomes clear that Eva’s Cursed series and Shane’s novel Eight have functioned as published messages to each other for fifteen years. The two arrange to meet the next morning at Kosciusko Café.
