Murder Like Clockwork Summary: A Cozy London Whodunnit

TL;DR: The Clean Scene

On a freezing February morning in Belgravia, house cleaner Audrey Brooks opens a bedroom door at 35 Beaton Gardens and finds a man sitting upright in a chair with his throat cut. She runs, calls 999, and waits for the police.

Twenty minutes later, two constables walk through the same house and find nothing — no body, no blood, no sign anyone was ever there. Murder Like Clockwork by Nicola Whyte follows Audrey and her neighbour Lewis McLennon, a reclusive crime novelist, as they try to prove that what she saw was real.

Set between a gated Chelsea square and an oligarch-owned London street, the novel is a traditional whodunnit built around a very modern problem.

Murder Like Clockwork Summary

Spoilers follow.

Audrey Brooks cleans 35 Beaton Gardens every Thursday from noon to three for Anton Petrov, an absentee Russian financier who pays her mainly to wind and care for his antique clocks. One freezing February Thursday she arrives half an hour early.

On the second floor she opens a bedroom door and sees a man seated in a chair, his throat slashed, blood pooling on plastic sheeting and spattering the walls. She flees the house and dials 999.

PC Wade and PC Yassin arrive twenty minutes later and find the bedroom empty, spotless and bloodless. They accuse Audrey of wasting police time and leave.

Audrey turns to her neighbour Lewis McLennon, an aspiring crime writer in Flat 5 of Marchfield Square. In the bedroom, Lewis spots a tiny cluster of fresh blood on the underside of the iron mantelpiece that the clean-up missed.

He also notices a scratch behind an antique clock that is running exactly four minutes slow. Audrey contacts DS Sofia Larssen, who is dating her flatmate Mei Chen.

Sofia swabs the mantelpiece blood but warns that without a body or a missing person, no formal homicide investigation can begin. Audrey and Lewis visit Trinity Property Management in Sloane Square to ask about alarm logs and security footage.

Senior Property Manager Felix Casetti reacts with irritation over Audrey’s early arrival and suspends her from the property. Managing Director Roland Waverley intervenes but refuses to hand over the footage.

Lewis reasons that the killers must have hidden the body inside the house and planned to move it after dark. That night Audrey, Lewis and Mei hold a midnight stakeout outside the townhouse, joined by cab driver Clayton.

At eleven they watch two figures in dark coats carry a heavy suitcase out of 35 Beaton Gardens and load it into a black minivan. Clayton follows the van to Tower Bridge, where the occupants dump the suitcase into the Thames at high tide.

The next day Anton Petrov arrives from Antibes. Meeting Audrey and Lewis at Celeste’s penthouse, he seems untroubled by the report of a murder and asks only about his clocks.

That afternoon an intruder picks the lock of Audrey and Mei’s flat and steals the vacuum bags of dirt Audrey collected from the house. Audrey realises she left one bag behind in her cleaning kit at Celeste’s.

Inside it she and Mei find cotton threads soaked in dried blood, giving Sofia physical evidence to submit to the police lab. To understand how a crime scene can be sanitised so quickly, Audrey and Lewis visit JTK Forensic Cleaning, run by John Keane with specialist cleaner Laila.

Meanwhile neighbour Mekhala Hetherington sketches the dead man from Audrey’s memory. When Sofia sees the drawing she identifies him as Don Tyler, a notorious international hitman.

Neighbour Manny Moya analyses a copy of the Trinity security drive that Audrey pressured Felix Casetti into handing over. He finds the system was hacked, with twenty-four hours of old empty hallway footage looped over the live feed.

Reinstated at the property, Audrey and Lewis search Petrov’s study. Following a tip from neighbours Captain Gordon and Victor DeFlore about building plans, Lewis pulls a bookshelf and reveals a concealed stainless-steel safe room.

On the safe room door Audrey smells Detergise, the proprietary cleaning agent developed by Laila at JTK. Shortly afterwards police recover the suitcase from the Thames shoreline at Rotherhithe, confirming Don Tyler’s corpse inside with a slashed throat.

Audrey and Lewis confront John Keane in a Piccadilly café. Speaking hypothetically, he lays out the real sequence of events.

Anton Petrov had arrived at the townhouse on Thursday morning and found Tyler’s body. Twenty-five years earlier Tyler had murdered Petrov’s wife, Madeleine.

Petrov had not killed him, but was glad Tyler was dead and terrified of being framed. He called his son John, who runs JTK under his mother’s maiden name, to sanitise the room.

John and Laila hid inside the safe room with the body while Audrey searched the house. They used Tyler’s phone to keep the CCTV hack running, then hauled the body away that night.

Audrey and Lewis also work out who actually killed Tyler. Mei’s client Baxter Cole, a Ponzi scheme operator facing trial, had vanished earlier that week.

Cole had been lured to 35 Beaton Gardens with £2 million in cash after receiving an email fraudulently sent in Petrov’s name. The hit had been arranged by Roland Waverley, who had embezzled from the Waverley Group and needed Cole’s money to pass a financial audit.

Waverley exploited Felix Casetti’s illegal weekend subletting operation to supply Tyler with access codes. When Tyler ambushed Cole in the bedroom, the antique clocks chimed loudly and startled them both.

Cole fought back in panic. Tyler slipped on the slick floor, landed heavily on the chair and severed his own throat on his knife.

A terrified Cole fled into the central garden, dropping the knife, and Roland Waverley later slipped into the house and took the £2 million. Lewis tracks Waverley down near Chelsea Bridge and confronts him with the scheme.

Waverley attacks Lewis with a heavy briefcase. Audrey, Clayton and Sofia arrive in time to subdue him and place him under arrest.

The Ending

Roland Waverley and Felix Casetti are prosecuted, and Baxter Cole is taken into custody for fraud. Anton Petrov tells Celeste he recovered the stolen £2 million and arranges for Mei Chen to distribute it anonymously to Cole’s defrauded investors.

John Keane’s role goes uncharged for lack of admissible evidence, and he and Audrey part with mutual respect and a hint of romance.

In the closing scenes Marchfield Square fills Flat 10 with new residents Mimi Bird, an anatomical pathologist technologist, and her sons.

Celeste and Dixon brought them in to give cabbie Clayton’s family a permanent home.
