Nightshade Summary: The Complete Story
Spoiler warning: This section recounts the full narrative, including the ending.
The story opens centuries ago in the village of Praecepsia, where a young girl named Lustina watches her mother Catriona burn at the stake.
Bishop Venable and the militant Pentacrux sect carry out the execution. Lustina is branded and forced into servitude at a monastery.
At the monastery, Lustina meets Baron Jericho Van Croix and his cousin Drystan. Jericho is a Sentinel, half angel and half demon.
He falls in love with Lustina and tattoos his protective silver sigil over her Pentacrux brand.
Drystan betrays them. Bishop Venable and the villagers seize Lustina and drown her in a forced baptism.
Jericho summons lightning and burns Praecepsia to the ground. He crucifies the bishop.
As punishment, the Sentinels strip Jericho of his memories and banish him to the parallel plane called Nightshade.
In the present day, Keri Lake introduces Farryn Ravenshaw, a university lecturer in Chicago studying iconology.
Detective Hines contacts her about the murder of Alicia Maxson. The ancient Pentacrux symbol was carved into stone at the scene, matching Farryn’s birthmark.
Farryn researches her missing father Augustus’s journals. A mysterious black feather appears in her bedroom.
She seeks out Xhiphias, a cambion who gives her nightshade tea to cross into the plane of Nightshade.
In Nightshade, Anya the housekeeper takes Farryn in at Blackwater Cathedral. Farryn is hired to care for Jericho’s vicious attack dogs.
Jericho, a reclusive broker of souls, is drawn to Farryn’s living scent and familiar eyes.
Farryn finds a book called “The Baron and Witch’s Daughter.” She begins experiencing echoes of her past life and realizes she is the reincarnation of Lustina.
Detective Hines is revealed to be Drystan. He escaped the void of Ex Nihilo.
He has been murdering modern victims to graft their body parts onto his back and restore his severed wings.
Drystan captures Farryn in the mortal realm. He tortures Jericho’s ally Remy by cutting off his wings.
Jericho possesses a mortal host, crosses to the earthly realm, and defeats Drystan’s Alatum army with Farryn’s help.
Back in Nightshade, Jericho kills Drystan. Farryn discovers she is pregnant with Jericho’s child, which breaks her reincarnation curse.
But Barchiel, the reincarnated Bishop Venable, stabs Jericho from behind. He severs Jericho’s wings and strips his Sentinel immortality.
Jericho’s body burns to ash. Farryn pays the ferryman to return to the mortal realm.
Three months later, a pregnant Farryn is back in Chicago. She learns her mother Catriona was an Irish aristocrat abducted by an angel named Ceallach O’Ruairc.
That angel now lives as a mortal fisherman named Gabriel Angelus. Farryn travels to Tempest Cove and finds him.
She trades Bishop Venable’s location for the translation of the Ex Nihilo sigil. She performs the ritual, and Jericho returns to her in the mortal realm.
Naked and wingless, Jericho is alive. They reunite and vow to stand together against the Sentinels who will inevitably hunt them.
The world-building in Nightshade spans two main environments. Praecepsia is a dark, medieval-gothic landscape ruled by religious zealotry.
The parallel plane of Nightshade is a lawless twin of the earthly world, covered in ashen gloom and lit by glowing nightshade flowers.
Blackwater Cathedral sits on a steep cliff above a black glass sea. It holds secret dungeons, massive libraries, and dangerous creatures such as the Alatum and the predatory Tu’Nazhja birds.
