The narrative operates across two realms. Mortasia is a decaying, cold mortal land ruled by a tyrannical church and dominated by perpetual winter.

Aethyria is a magical realm powered by lifeforce energy called vivicantem, where mages and assassins hold power and those without magic are treated as worthless chattel. An invisible magical barrier called the Umbravale separates the two worlds.

Keri Lake opens the story with Maevyth and Zevander discovering Maevyth’s sister Aleysia unresponsive and freezing inside the crawl space of Elowen’s cabin in the Eating Woods. Zevander, a Vespyri assassin serving as the vessel for Deimos, the god of sablefyre, is running low on vivicantem.

His power is failing, which triggers painful memories of his brutal childhood in the Solassion mines under the abusive General Loyce.

Meanwhile, in Aethyria, the assassins Kazhimyr and Ravezio escape imprisonment and team up with the Elvyniran highblood Dravien Nockvayne to pursue Zevander and secure bloodstones.

As Maevyth trains with Zevander in the snow to control her emerging bone whip glyph, Aleysia awakens with a veined black mass on her torso and a ravenous hunger for raw meat.

The trio travels to Foxglove Parish and explores the dilapidated mansion of Moros, Maevyth’s cruel former betrothed.

Inside the mansion, they discover Moros has kidnapped Lyverian women and horribly mutilated them into mermaids. Zevander puts them out of their misery and extracts their bloodstones.

They seek refuge in the village’s Red Temple, where they find Maevyth’s father and a companion named Corwin imprisoned in the dungeons. Sacton Crain, the fanatical sacton of the temple, corners them and boasts of having murdered Maevyth’s mother years ago.

Overcome with grief and rage, Maevyth embraces her power as Morsana’s death vessel and disintegrates Sacton Crain into ash. Fleeing Foxglove, the group heads toward the Lyverian Mountains.

Along the way, Zevander’s protective instincts turn excessively violent when he executes a desperate soldier, creating emotional distance between him and Maevyth.

They seek shelter in a ruined church but are ambushed by the Vyrmish, grotesque blind subterranean beasts. The ancient church collapses during the battle, trapping Zevander under the rubble.

Maevyth awakens in a Lyverian carriage and is brought to Crovenrock Temple. She reunites with her father and learns that Priestess Erithanya is her aunt.

Erithanya cures Aleysia’s infection and reveals that Maevyth is the Vasmora, a death vessel chosen by Morsana to restore their extinct bloodline by mating with their strongest warrior.

To prove she can defy this fate, Maevyth undergoes a trial in the dead vein.

Zevander, controlled by the dark curse of Magelord Cadavros, arrives and attacks her. In a desperate bid to save him from madness, Maevyth offers her silver-streaked blood, establishing a soul-binding blood bond that successfully restores his sanity.

Kazhimyr, Ravezio, and Dravien arrive, and they all venture into the giant Rotting Tree to escape the spider-hybrids.

They flee toward the Umbravale, but Cadavros corners them at the barrier. He brutally murders Ravezio, forcing Zevander to mercifully turn his friend’s body into a bloodstone.

Zevander fiercely battles Cadavros and attempts to burn down the Umbravale barrier using the ancient Gods’ Glyph. However, as the barrier flickers, the dark chasm pulls Zevander over the edge.

His hand slips from Maevyth’s grasp, sending him falling into the dark void.

Maevyth, Kazhimyr, and Dravien are forced back to Aethyria, where they are captured by General Loyce and Cadavros’s disfigured sister, Melisara.

She plans to feed Maevyth to her pets. The novel ends on a cliffhanger, revealing that Zevander survived the fall and is clinging to a narrow rock ledge in the chasm as his dragon-bird Raivox hovers over him, preparing a rescue.
