Maya’s College Years (2010–2012)
Maya Banks enters Princeton in 2010 as a scholarship student grieving both parents.
She joins the exclusive Sterling Club during her junior year and is soon tapped for the Greystone Society, led by Professor Matthew DuPont.
Maya discovers that DuPont runs admissions bribery schemes, insider trading, and blackmail operations through Greystone. To afford a safer life for Naomi, she accepts $10,000 to write a wealthy teenager’s application essays and take his SATs.
Fellow Greystone member Lila Jones uncovers DuPont’s fraud and threatens to report him. After DuPont assaults her, Maya and her friends plan to drug him at a ski retreat to extract a confession. Lila accidentally consumes the spiked drink and freezes to death in a snowstorm.
DuPont and Cecily St. Clair move Lila’s body to make the death look accidental. Maya believes her spiked drink killed Lila, but she stays silent to avoid prison and protect Naomi.
She accepts Cecily’s offer to move Naomi to Greenwich under the guardianship of Cecily’s brother and sister-in-law.

Naomi’s College Years and Investigation (2022–2023)
A decade later, Naomi attends Princeton, joins Sterling and Greystone, and excels as a dancer in the Black Arts Company. Her roommate Amy Chen, an international student interning for The New York Times, begins investigating financial fraud at Hunt Investment Group.
Naomi and Amy uncover Lila Jones’s 2012 death and suspect foul play. Intimidation follows: their dorm room is vandalized, and DuPont leaks a private video of Amy during a lecture, costing her a job offer.
Naomi contacts Lila’s brother Trevor and housekeeper Marta Koval. Marta emails Naomi a video proving DuPont and Cecily dragged Lila’s unconscious body through the cabin.
In late May 2023, during Reunions weekend, Naomi meets Cecily in Manhattan to present the evidence. Cecily secretly spikes Naomi’s drink with Temazepam and ketamine.
DuPont and Cecily drive Naomi’s unconscious body back to campus and drown her in Lake Carnegie.
Maya’s Investigation and the Ending
Maya arrives at Princeton for Reunions and learns Naomi’s body has been recovered. Police initially label it an accidental drowning, but toxicology reveals high ketamine levels.
Maya finds a hidden notebook in Naomi’s bedroom referencing Lila Jones and the question “WHO KILLED LILA JONES?”
A puncture mark on Naomi’s neck converts the case into a murder investigation. During Kai’s wedding at the St. Clair estate, Matthew DuPont is found stabbed to death. Suspicion briefly falls on Nate and Maya.
Cecily kidnaps Maya, drugs her, and transports her to the remote Greystone ski cabin in New Hampshire. Cecily confesses to poisoning Naomi and framing Maya, planning to burn the cabin with Maya inside.
Maya escapes into the woods. Cecily corners her at a pre-dug grave, but Marta strikes Cecily down with a shovel, killing her to save Maya. In the aftermath, Amy’s article exposes Greystone and Theodore Hunt’s financial fraud.
Maya, Nate, Dani, and Daisy gather in the Hamptons to scatter Naomi’s ashes.
In the final moments, Maya receives a text from Margaret St. Clair containing a photo of a clean kitchen knife, revealing that Margaret stabbed and killed Matthew DuPont to avenge Naomi.
