Thirteen years earlier, Greg and Amy Olsen lived comfortably in Austin, Texas.
After years of infertility and miscarriages, they fostered an infant named Marcy and planned to adopt her.
On the eve of the adoption, a judge unexpectedly awarded custody to Marcy’s biological mother, Candace McGee.
That night Candace arrived at the Olsens’ home barefoot and bleeding from a fatal stab wound.

Before dying in Greg’s arms, Candace warned that someone was coming to harm Marcy and begged him to save her. Seconds later, Greg saw a stocky, bearded intruder enter the house on the security feed.
Greg and Amy grabbed the baby and fled. They abandoned their Lexus in Waco, withdrew cash, and obtained fake identities through a black-market contact in Prague.
For thirteen years they moved across Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho before settling in Winter Park, Colorado. Under the aliases Cole, Lisa, and Jade Shipley, they built a modest but happy life.
Cole worked as a history teacher, Lisa coached cheerleading part-time, and Jade became a competitive cheerleader. Jade suffered from severe scoliosis that caused constant pain, and their insurance refused to cover the surgery.
Cole decided to access a dormant offshore account containing $150,000 to pay for the operation. The transaction triggered an FBI alert monitored by Special Agent Mark Burns, who had chased the Olsen case for over a decade.
At the same time, corrupt FBI insider Ross Lester leaked the discovery to Carl Fisk, a Washington political fixer representing Supreme Court nominee Peter Nelson. Fisk and Nelson sent Brock Gunner, the same bearded killer who murdered Candace, to silence the family.
At this point in Not Our Daughter, the story splits between law enforcement and a hired killer. Chad Zunker alternates between the Shipleys’ escape and the political conspiracy in Washington.
In Colorado, Cole noticed an agent tailing him at a grocery store. He disabled the agent’s vehicle, rushed home, and ordered Lisa and Jade to flee.
While Lisa and Jade escaped in their Subaru, Cole acted as a decoy at a crowded concert. Cornered by local officer Tommy Johnson, Cole watched Brock Gunner shoot the officer and open fire on him.
Cole escaped with a grazed arm and reunited with his family on Rendezvous Mountain.
They switched to a backup plumbing van, and Cole shaved his head and beard to alter his appearance.
They fled south toward El Paso. During a late-night stop in Alamosa, Jade secretly used her mother’s phone to call her boyfriend, Tyler, and the FBI intercepted the call.
In El Paso, Cole entered Cielo Vista Mall to buy burner phones. Jade saw a news broadcast revealing her parents’ identities and fled, but Lisa found her and explained that they did not kill Candace.
Brock Gunner spotted Cole in the parking lot and fired a rifle, shattering the mall entrance and causing a shooter panic. Brock cornered Cole in a Sears warehouse, where Agent Burns also arrived.
Cole tackled Brock to save Burns, then bound Burns with duct tape and escaped wearing the agent’s FBI jacket. He stole a Ford Explorer and reunited with his family.
The family drove to Austin to find answers. They contacted Candace’s sister Hailey McGee, who recognized Brock’s photo and revealed that Candace had an affair with a wealthy businessman nearly nine months before Jade’s birth.
That businessman was Peter Nelson, Jade’s biological father. Candace had tried to blackmail Nelson for $250,000, so Nelson sent Brock to kill her and frame the Olsens.
Brock tracked the family to Austin and cornered Cole on Sixth Street. Lisa knocked Brock out with a metal pipe, and the family fled into a parking garage.
Brock cornered them again, but Agent Burns, who had traced Brock’s rental car to the Nelson connection, arrived and shot Brock dead. Cole surrendered and gave Burns a thumb drive containing Candace’s original blackmail email.
That proof allowed the FBI to arrest Peter Nelson in Washington, DC, on conspiracy and murder charges. The Shipleys were fully exonerated.
Agent Burns arranged for a top spine surgeon to perform Jade’s scoliosis surgery.
The novel ends with the family flying on a private plane to a safe location, free to live openly.
