Her major opportunity arrives when Isabella Hawthorne, owner of a top Upper East Side gallery and a former friend of her mother, offers her a slot in an upcoming show—demanding a completely original piece on a tight deadline.
Frustrated and out of ideas, Hannah stumbles upon an estate sale in the West Village hosted by an elderly widow named Maude. There, Hannah finds an unfinished oil painting of a female nude in water by Maude’s late husband, Ivan.
Captivated, Hannah takes the canvas to her studio, paints over the subject’s open eyes so they appear closed, and presents it to Isabella.
Isabella buys the piece for $70,000, naming it The Muse, and Hannah becomes an overnight art-world sensation.
However, Hannah is consumed by intense guilt, panic attacks, and fear of exposure. At her gallery opening, a handsome stranger named Brooks ominously asks her why she closed the eyes of the figure compared to the original.
