The Day I Lost You Summary: A Mother’s Desperate Act

TL;DR: The Short Version

A woman lives off-grid in a small Spanish fishing town with her toddler son.

When police arrive asking about a missing British child, she takes the boy and heads for the mountains.

That is the situation at the centre of The Day I Lost You by Ruth Mancini, a psychological thriller about grief, memory, and the lengths a mother will go to.

The novel moves backwards through time, from a coastal hideout in Spain to a quiet Buckinghamshire village and a fatal road accident.

Two families are tied together by one afternoon, and neither knows the full truth about what the other has done.

Readers of domestic noir, legal crime drama, and reverse-chronology thrillers are the natural audience.

The book centres on motherhood, trauma, and moral compromise rather than graphic violence.

The Day I Lost You Summary: What Happens in the Book

Spoiler warning: this section describes the plot in full, including the ending.

The Crash

In Chorley Common, Buckinghamshire, Andrew “Drew” Faris is head of planning for Wallingford District Council and married to psychotherapist Hope Dunsmore. Drew has been having an affair with a work colleague named Sorcha.

On Valentine’s Day 2022, Hope reads messages on Drew’s phone and discovers the affair. The shock sends her into premature labour at 32 weeks.

Drew drives her toward Woodley Ridge Hospital in his yellow Porsche 911, overtaking a lorry on a blind bend on the Old Chiltern Road. An oncoming Audi A6 is forced off the road and crashes through a hedgerow into trees.

The Audi is driven by Lauren Hopwood, an environmental engineer. Her husband Charlie dies at the scene, and their six-week-old son Samuel dies in hospital shortly after. Lauren survives with severe spinal injuries and complete amnesia.

Drew flees the scene and continues to the hospital, where Hope gives birth to a premature boy they also name Samuel. He never reports the accident.

Lauren’s Search

Lauren wakes unable to remember the crash. She spots the yellow Porsche in the hospital car park and photographs it, tracing the car to Drew in Chorley Common.

Using the alias “Anna Wall”, she books therapy sessions with Drew’s wife, Hope. She learns that Hope gave birth to a boy at the same hospital on the same day she lost her own baby.

Grieving, dependent on painkillers, and convinced something deliberate happened, Lauren becomes fixated on the idea that Hope’s child belongs to her. Hope realises who “Anna Wall” is and ends the sessions.

Lauren reports the Porsche to PC Jenkins, but police take no further action because of her amnesia and the absence of physical evidence. She spends weeks watching Flint Cottage.

The Abduction

One evening while Hope is at a fitness class, Lauren lures Drew into the garden and slips inside. She lifts seven-month-old Sam from his cot and carries him out in a sling.

Drew catches her in the field behind the house. Lauren threatens to expose his role in the crash, and he lets her go.

Lauren travels to Mantilla de Mar in Spain with forged documents, raising the boy as Samuel Hopwood. She grows close to a local man, Gabriel “Gabe”, who lost his own young son to leukaemia.

In England, Hope and Drew initially conceal the abduction. Hope tells neighbour Jess Brierley that Sam is in hospital or part of a surrogacy arrangement.

Hope reports Sam missing in January 2023. Jess calls Thames Valley Police in July 2023, and Interpol issues a Yellow Notice for Samuel Dunsmore-Faris.

Flight to the Pyrenees

In July 2024, Spanish police locate Lauren after a tip-off. Gabe hides her at his grandparents’ remote cabin in Huesca, in the Pyrenees.

Lauren contacts the London criminal defence solicitor Sarah Kellerman and decides to return to England. She leaves Sam in Spain with Gabe, his sister Marta, and his aunt Lucía.

Arrest and Resolution

Lauren is arrested at Heathrow Airport. At almost the same moment, Drew walks into the airport police station, believing Lauren is in custody. He offers to confess to causing the fatal crash if the abduction charges against her are dropped.

Sarah Kellerman represents both of them. She concludes the police have no direct witness testimony or physical evidence to prove intent beyond reasonable doubt, and instructs both clients to answer “No comment” in interviews.

Without confessions or new evidence, the Crown Prosecution Service finds insufficient grounds to prosecute Drew or Lauren for murder, manslaughter, or abduction. Lauren is released on bail and her travel restrictions are lifted.

Ending

Hope and Drew travel to Huesca and meet Lauren, Gabe, and two-year-old Sam in a public park. They agree that removing the child abruptly would cause him severe trauma.

Instead they begin a gradual transition, spending time with Sam in Spain and letting him get to know them. Lauren is pregnant with Gabe’s child, a boy they plan to name Daniel after Gabe’s late son.

In the closing chapters, Lauren reflects by the sea that loss cannot be undone, and that everything changes.
