The Last Vampire Summary: A Gothic Dark Academia Tale

TL;DR: A Vampire Wakes Beneath a Boarding School

Huntington Academy looks like an ordinary elite boarding school tucked into the forests of New Hampshire.

Its crumbling towers and roped-off corridors suggest something older, and something hidden, is still running underneath.

That is where eighteen-year-old Lorena Navarro discovers a sealed chamber, an antique coffin, and a history that no textbook records.

Romina Garber’s The Last Vampire follows what happens when Lorena’s blood wakes a vampire who has slept for more than two centuries.

What begins as a dangerous secret between a mortal teenager and an immortal stranger grows into a larger question about who erased vampires from human memory, and why.

  • Lorena Navarro accidentally awakens William Pride, a vampire turned in 1768, in a hidden room beneath her boarding school.
  • She blackmails him with video evidence to protect her friends, then becomes his Familiar under an uneasy truce.
  • William learns that vampires were systematically deleted from human history, and that only 54 of his kind remain on Earth.
  • He also discovers he is the last surviving male of the Stoker bloodline, the only line capable of turning humans into vampires.
  • The story moves from Huntington Academy to Harvard, Boston, and the catacombs of Paris, ending with a choice that separates the two leads before a reunion nine months later.

The novel blends gothic boarding school suspense with a romance built on blackmail, blood, and a shared countdown.

The Last Vampire Summary: Full Story Walkthrough

Spoilers ahead. This section covers the plot from beginning to end, including the ending.

Part One: The Fall

Lorena Navarro arrives at Huntington Academy with her best friend Salma and roommates Tiffany and Zach. Along with history enthusiast Trevor, the group explores a restricted basement hidden behind a heavy wardrobe.

Inside, they find a chamber of blank books and an antique coffin. When Lorena cuts her hand, her blood drips onto the coffin and wakes William Pride, a vampire turned in 1768.

Starving, William attacks Lorena and bites her neck. She fights him off and records the encounter on her phone, threatening to release the footage to the Legion of Fire if he harms anyone.

To stay close to her, William uses mind compulsion on Director Minaro and enrolls as a waitlisted student named William Pride. Lorena agrees to act as his Familiar.

As William learns about the twenty-first century, he searches for records of his own kind and finds nothing. He takes Lorena to Harvard’s Massachusetts Hall to retrieve a 250-year-old time capsule.

The capsule holds his family portrait, an original Hamlet manuscript, and portraits of historic vampire figures. Human history, he realizes, has been rewritten.

Part Two: The Break

Back at Huntington, William and Lorena study a timeline projected on the ceiling of the Library of Unwritten Books. Two modern vampires, Nate and Cisco, then track William’s scent to Hanover.

They tell him only 54 vampires remain on Earth, unable to turn humans. They take him to Boston to meet forger Henry and financial coordinator Anne, who provide identification and funds.

William flies to Paris to meet Leonardo the Bloody, an ancient vampire living in the catacombs who rejects peace and experiments on captive humans.

Meanwhile, Fabiana, a vampire posing as a teacher at Huntington, explains that Grandsire sacrificed 100 vampires to cast a spell that displaced the species into the future.

Reading hidden blood-ink inscriptions on his family portrait, William learns he is the last surviving male of the Stoker bloodline and the heir to vampirekind.

Part Three: The Fallout

Nate and Cisco infiltrate Huntington on Lenny’s orders to capture William and cut off his human ties. Inside the library, Cisco grabs Salma and snaps her neck.

Lorena reveals that Salma was already dying of advanced terminal leukemia. Desperate to save her, William feeds Salma his Stoker blood, transforming her into a vampire.

William confronts Leonardo the Bloody in a meadow near the school. Though brutalized, he draws strength from Lorena and his duty, and severs Lenny’s neck with a ceremonial dagger.

Recognizing his authority as the Stoker heir, the remaining vampires kneel and bow to William. Director Minaro then reveals she is the Guardian of Grandsire’s spell, formed from the blood of 100 sacrificed vampires.

She explains that Huntington was built to gather descendants of hidden Stoker human lines. To complete the spell and return the displaced vampires, all remaining vampires must enter death-sleep together in the library nexus.

William accepts his destiny and says goodbye to Lorena, declaring his love before entering hibernation with his species.

Epilogue: Nine Months Later

Because Salma was turned after the original spell, she is exempt from death-sleep. Now immortal, she leaves to travel the world.

Lorena, Tiffany, Zach, and Trevor keep their memories and begin investigating the Legion of Fire, which connects to Trevor’s father’s firm, Blackfire Investments.

Nine months later, on Lorena’s nineteenth birthday, William Stoker appears outside her home with glowing amethyst eyes. The spell has broken, and the missing vampires have returned.

He vows to stay by her side as a new era for humans and vampires begins.

Quotes from The Last Vampire

“All your history is made of lies.”

“Vampires once roamed the earth. And somehow, humans defeated them. Then we erased them from history.”

“A Eulogy for William’s Humanity
William delighted in the pursuits of the learned, the grace of the dance, and the freedom of the saddle.
He harbored dreams of a marital union forged in love, of begetting heirs, and of penning tales sprung from his own imaginings.
But alas, all that was William perished when his heart ceased its beat.
For what creed remains to a man who is betrayed by his own blood?”

“You will always be a human first, and I will always be a vampire.”

“Vampires are masters of time.”

“I am the last Stoker, and I command you to stop.”

“It feels like I’m making out with winter,” she murmurs. “And I with summer.”

“Is it still a happily-ever-after if the world implodes?” I murmur.
William’s lips brush mine. “As long as we are together.”
