This Brutal Moon Summary: The Deep Dive

Spoilers ahead.

Seti Kess, formerly Seti Moonback, consolidates power by slaughtering the judicial Secretaries and declaring himself regent. He commands the Brutal Hand war fleet and promises to crush all rebellion.

Across the Treble, uprisings erupt on planets like Teros and Kator. Rogue cleric Chono and Six, a survivor haunted by the persona of Esek Nightfoot, work to forge a rebel coalition called the Quorum.

On Capamame, master caster Jun Ironway and her partner Liis Konye discover that Jun’s cousin Ujan has been acting as “the avatar,” sabotaging the colony. Ujan leaked neural gate keys to Seti Kess.

Commandant Yorus Inye arrives at Capamame with a warship under the guise of protection. Meanwhile, Ujan’s brother Tej reveals that the Silver Keep, the Cloaksaan’s mobile fortress, is hidden beneath the moon Jeve.

Jun decodes the journals of historical leader Drae sen Briit using a translation program. She learns that Drae left a backdoor program in Jeve’s network that could disable the Silver Keep’s defenses.

A summit on M-4 Station between Chono and the First Families is ambushed by extremist rebels. Matriarchs Oyun Paiye and Khen Obair are killed. Chono executes the attackers to prevent lawless terror.

The final conflict unfolds on three fronts. First, Yorus Inye’s forces invade Capamame, breaching Farren Eyce. Effegen ten Crost and Bene Ironway lead a defense.

In orbit, collector Masar Hawks and pirate Vikar Wren commandeer the generation ship Drae’s Hope and ram the flagship Katanye Ten, destroying the blockade.

Second, Jun and Liis allow themselves to be captured and taken to the Silver Keep. Jun endures torture by Seti Kess while secretly hacking the fortress’s network with help from the Ar’tec Collective.

Third, on Jeve’s surface, Chono and Six breach an underground chamber and reach the dormant Lot 12 power core. Liis duels Seti Kess inside the Keep.

Jun disables the Keep’s shields, and Six activates Lot 12. The core triggers a massive implosion, creating a sinkhole twenty miles wide that swallows the Silver Keep and Seti Kess.

Jun, Liis, Chono, and Six escape in an automated pod as Jeve’s surface collapses. The Brutal Hand is destroyed.

In the aftermath, the First Families lose their dominance. The Quorum establishes a collective council and defense coalition. Ujan Redcore is stripped of her neural link and sent to a monastery.

Six bids farewell to Chono and boards a cargo vessel to seek distant kin and a life free from Esek Nightfoot’s ghost. Bethany Jacobs concludes the trilogy with a new era for the Treble.
