The Water Lies Summary (Spoilers)

Spoilers follow.

Amy Meyerson’s The Water Lies begins with Tessa Irons at Café Collage in Venice Beach with her eighteen-month-old son, Jasper. Jasper throws a tantrum when a blond artist ignores him and repeatedly calls her “Gigi.”

The next morning, the Linnie Canal outside Tessa’s home is drained. Police recover the body of thirty-two-year-old Regina Geller and rule her death an accidental drowning.

Watching the news, Tessa recognizes Regina as the woman from the coffee shop. She realizes Jasper knew the dead woman.

In Tenafly, New Jersey, Barb Geller learns from her ex-husband, Isaac, that Regina has died. Barb knows Regina was a varsity swimmer, a former lifeguard, and seven years sober.

Barb rejects the accidental drowning theory. She flies to Los Angeles to investigate on her own.

Barb visits the Linnie Canal and sees how shallow the water is. She meets Tessa outside her home, and Tessa shows Jasper a photograph of Regina.

Jasper again calls Regina “Gigi.” Tessa tries to report this to Officer Gonzales, but he dismisses her as a worried pregnant woman.

Outside the police station, Tessa meets Barb. The two women form an uneasy alliance.

They visit The Brig, where a bartender says Regina was drinking with a woman on the night she died. They also visit Regina’s ex-girlfriend, Maisy Rosenthal.

Maisy reveals that Regina was secretly having an affair with a wealthy man living along the canals. In Regina’s apartment, Barb finds a custom rose-cut diamond earring.

Tessa recognizes the earring as one of five limited-edition pairs she designed. She visits Maya Linsky, the gallery owner who sold the earrings, and checks the client ledger.

The ledger shows that Tessa’s neighbor, movie producer Dan Huntsman, bought a pair. Tessa suspects Dan was having an affair with Regina and murdered her.

Tessa later sees Dan in an apparent physical altercation with his wife, Claire. She calls 911, but Claire shows no marks, and Tessa’s friendship with Claire and the neighborhood mothers is destroyed.

The investigation shifts when Aram Yassin, an embryologist at Gabe’s fertility clinic, is found dead of an apparent overdose. Barb and Tessa review Regina’s tax returns and find large payments from “Rosebud LLC.”

Tessa recognizes Rosebud LLC as one of Gabe’s corporate entities. On Gabe’s computer, she finds an unread email from Aram pleading that they were not safe and needed to tell the police.

Tessa and Barb locate Marley, an aspiring actress recruited by Regina, at lifeguard Tower 50. Marley says Regina recruited her to donate eggs through Gabe’s clinic for cash.

Tessa breaks into filing cabinets at Gabe’s office and compares intake forms with patient files. She realizes Gabe was running an illicit egg harvesting and donor recruitment ring.

She also realizes Jasper was conceived using Regina’s donated egg, implanted into Tessa without her knowledge or consent. Regina was Jasper’s biological egg donor, which explains why she watched him and why he called her “Gigi.”

Fearing Barb will claim biological rights to Jasper, Tessa demands that Barb leave her home. Soon after, Tessa’s water breaks, and Gabe rushes her to Cedars-Sinai.

Tessa delivers a baby girl named Opal via C-section. In the recovery room, she confronts Gabe.

Gabe confesses to the secret egg donation scheme but insists he did not kill Regina or Aram. Tessa orders him out of her life.

Tessa returns home with Opal and Jasper, supported by Barb. While Barb takes Jasper to the park, an intruder enters Tessa’s unlocked house.

The intruder is Paul Marker, the ex-husband of Gabe’s client Maya Linsky. Paul explains that his young son, Marcus, died from a rare genetic disorder.

Neither Paul nor Maya carried the gene. Paul discovered that Gabe had implanted an unauthorized donor egg carrying a fatal flaw.

Driven by grief, Paul poisoned Regina with ketamine and alcohol before drowning her in the canal. He also poisoned Aram to look like an overdose and broke into Tessa’s home to eliminate Gabe.

When Paul moves toward baby Opal’s bassinet with a knife, Tessa attacks him. Gabe arrives and tackles Paul.

During the struggle, Paul stabs Gabe in the back. Gabe dies as police arrive.

Six months later, toxicology reports confirm Paul Marker’s confession. Gabe’s illegal operations are exposed to the public.

Tessa sells her Venice Canals house and moves with Jasper and Opal to Bergen County, New Jersey, near Barb. The novel ends on the first night of Hanukkah with Barb, Tessa, Jasper, and Opal celebrating together.

Quotes from The Water Lies

“Don’t you see? Regina said. You always make it your problem to fix. It’s not helpful. It just makes everything worse.”

“When I was a new mom, I thought about death constantly. It became my companion, a tortured form of love, a preoccupation that kept real loss at bay.”

“Everyone says parenthood gets easier as your children get older. Those early days are the easy ones. The days where love comes naturally and willingly, where you’re the center of their world. The days where it seems possible to keep them safe.”

“Though it comes from a good place, I hate how, when you’re pregnant, people try to interpret rather than hear you.”

“You can judge the strength of a metal by how much pressure it can withstand before deteriorating, how far it can be stretched, the impact it can endure, how much compression before it fractures. All metal has a breaking point, especially iron, if it isn’t fortified with anything else.”

“I thought Gabe was my home. I thought we sheltered each other. But Gabe’s been the worst kind of threat, the one I couldn’t see until it was too late.”

“You don’t get me at all, she’d said without an ounce of the histrionics her words implied. Why do you think I’m into everything? I need to understand what makes people tick or my characters will be bloodless.”
