Lisbeth Salander is serving a two-month sentence at Flodberga Prison for reckless endangerment. Inside the secure B Unit, gang leader Benito Andersson terrorizes a young Bangladeshi woman named Faria Kazi.
Salander initially stays detached, but her former guardian Holger Palmgren visits with news about a woman with a dragon-like birthmark from her childhood.
Palmgren reveals that a former secretary from a psychiatric clinic provided documents about Salander’s past. The papers mention an organization called the Registry for the Study of Genetics and Social Environment.
Salander realizes the woman who tested her as a child was likely part of this Registry. She overpowers Warden Alvar Olsen and forces him to give her an internet-connected computer.
Salander hacks into the Institute for Medical Genetics in Uppsala. She finds confidential reports with her name and details of a scientific experiment called Project 9.
