Jo Nesbo’s The Snowman opens in 1980 with a mother, Sara Kvinesland, meeting a lover while her son waits in the car. The lover has no nipples, a detail that matters later. On the drive home, they pass a strange snowman.

In November 2004, Birte Becker vanishes on the first snow in Oslo. Her son Jonas finds her pink scarf on a snowman in the yard. Inspector Harry Hole gets the case and remembers a letter signed with a snowman drawing.

The Snowman summary Jo Nesbø (5)

Harry works with new partner Katrine Bratt and forensics officer Bjørn Holm. Detective Magnus Skarre finds that over ten years, many married mothers disappeared on the first snow and were never found.

A second victim, Sylvia Ottersen, is found beheaded. Her head sits on a snowman in the forest. Both Birte and Sylvia had visited plastic surgeon Idar Vetlesen to test their children for Fahr’s Syndrome.

Harry and Katrine travel to Bergen to look into detective Gert Rafto’s 1992 disappearance. In a cabin freezer, Harry finds Rafto’s frozen corpse with his mouth stitched shut. Back in Oslo, Vetlesen is found dead in a staged suicide.

Police announce Vetlesen was the Snowman, but Harry doubts it. Filip Becker learns Jonas is not his biological son. Arve Støp, a wealthy editor, is the biological father of several victims’ children.

Katrine is exposed as Rafto’s daughter. She abducts Støp, places a pig mask on him, and tries to strangle him. Harry rescues Støp, and Katrine is sent to a psychiatric facility.

Harry realizes the real Snowman is still free. He links clues to Mathias Lund-Helgesen, Rakel’s fiancé: B-negative blood, no nipples, access to paternity files, and a terminal illness. Mathias targets unfaithful mothers because his own mother was unfaithful.

Mathias abducts Rakel and Oleg. He locks Oleg in a freezer and rigs Rakel to a melting snowman with a heated wire around her neck. Harry crashes through a window using a Land Rover and tow rope.

As the snowman collapses, the wire cuts off Harry’s right middle finger and damages his index finger. He saves Rakel and Oleg. Harry then chases Mathias to the top of the Holmenkollen ski jump tower.

Mathias jumps and tries to drag Harry down with handcuffs, but Harry holds on.

Mathias falls to his death. Katrine is later cleared. In a final meeting at Lake Sognsvann, Harry tells Rakel he is never coming back.
