Cry Havoc Summary: From Laos to Berlin

SPOILER WARNING: This section recounts the full plot, including the ending.

Jack Carr’s Cry Havoc opens in May 1968 in Laos. Tom Reece and Frank Quinn lead Recon Team Havoc on a covert wiretap mission along the Ho Chi Minh Trail.

The team is ambushed by a large North Vietnamese Army force that appears to know their location. During the extraction, Quinn’s helicopter is shot down, and Reece cuts his own rope to fall back into the jungle.

The narrative flashes back four months to January 1968. North Korean forces seize the spy ship USS Pueblo, giving the Soviet GRU intact American cipher machines.

GRU director Mikhail Lavrinenko still needs active encryption keys. Those keys are supplied by U.S. Navy insider John Walker and NSA specialist Allister Desmond.

Desmond is recruited by East German agent Clara Müller. He leaks critical keying material to the Soviets while working at the National Security Agency in Maryland.

In South Vietnam, Reece and Quinn capture NVA intelligence officer Colonel Phúc Trân near Phu Bai. Their convoy is then hit by a sophisticated ambush in Saigon.

ARVN Captain Lam, a communist asset, executes the prisoner to keep him silent. He is killed by Quinn and Reece, but Montagnard team leader Amiuh is mortally wounded.

When the Tet Offensive erupts, Reece and Quinn defend the U.S. Embassy. They later rescue wealthy French-Vietnamese businessman Gaston DuBois and his daughter Ella from a Viet Cong assault at the Majestic Hotel.

Quinn flies north to return Amiuh’s body to his village. Reece remains in Saigon, where his relationship with Ella becomes romantic.

Soviet GRU Major Kirill Dvornikov and Spetsnaz assassin Adrik Voronin are running a campaign to capture MACV-SOG operators and transfer them to Siberia for interrogation.

The timeline returns to May 1968. After falling from the helicopter, Reece finds the crash site and discovers Phe dead and Hoahn executed.

He tracks bare footprints to an NVA depot. There he witnesses Voronin disembowel Frank Quinn and set his entrails on fire.

Reece cannot save Quinn. He uses a Soviet ZPU-1 antiaircraft gun to destroy much of the camp before escaping down the Sepon River.

Back at Phu Bai, Reece convinces FOB commander Konrad Backhaus to launch an unauthorized rescue mission. The depot is empty except for Quinn’s decapitated body tied to a tree.

Quinn’s head is stuffed in his stomach, and he holds his double-barred rosary. The image drives Reece into the CIA’s covert war.

Reece is officially sheep-dipped into the CIA. With officer Nick Serrano, he discovers that Gaston DuBois’s physician, Dr. Jean René Brémaud, is a Soviet spy using a hidden R-354 burst transmitter.

Ella DuBois has been traveling to Bangkok to meet her former lover Dvornikov. She has unwittingly acted as Brémaud’s dead drop courier.

Reece and Serrano capture Ella in Saigon and convince her to serve as bait. The plan is to trap Dvornikov at the Oriental Hotel in Bangkok.

Voronin discovers the ruse and murders Ella in her hotel room. Reece and Serrano chase the Soviets through the canals of Bangkok in longtail boats.

Reece uses a spinning boat propeller to severely wound Voronin. He captures both Voronin and Dvornikov.

On an abandoned trawler, Reece disembowels Voronin and burns his entrails with kerosene. A terrified Dvornikov confesses that six American SOG and pilot POWs are held in Siberia.

The U.S. government chooses political convenience. Washington trades Dvornikov back to Moscow in exchange for the eighty-two surviving crew members of the USS Pueblo.

Allister Desmond is arrested by the FBI after Lavrinenko leaks his identity to protect the more valuable navy spy John Walker. Lavrinenko also exposes his own deputy, Anatoly Penkovsky, as a CIA double agent.

Disillusioned, Tom Reece travels to East Berlin in December 1968. He swims the Teltow Canal, enters Dvornikov’s apartment, and assassinates him.

Reece leaves behind the silent Soviet MSP pistol used to kill Ella. He then returns to Southeast Asia to join Serrano’s new Phoenix Program.
