Famous Last Words Summary: The Full Story

Spoiler warning: This section reveals the ending.

In June 2017, Camilla Fletcher returns to her job as a literary agent. That morning, her husband Luke leaves a note that says, “It’s been so lovely with you both.” He then disappears.

The same day, DCI Niall Thompson is called to a warehouse in Bermondsey. Luke is holding three hostages. One hostage, Isabella Louis, is released. Then two gunshots are heard, and the two male hostages are found dead.

Luke escapes through a secret service lift. His disappearance destroys Niall’s career and marriage. Camilla is left alone with their nine-month-old daughter, Polly.

Seven years later, Camilla is using her maiden name and trying to have Luke declared dead. She receives text coordinates in Islington and a Jiffy bag containing a bound thriller manuscript.

Niall, now a detective, traces the coordinates to Dungeness. Camilla reads the manuscript and notices disturbing parallels to her own life. She realizes Luke wrote it as a disguised memoir.

The investigation reveals that the two hostages were contract killers sent by the Hale and Lancaster crime families. Luke had witnessed a murder in Whitechapel and accidentally killed Alexander Hale while intervening.

George Louis, a corrupt Met officer, used his position to delete the hitmen’s identities. He also sent Charlie, Camilla’s boyfriend, to monitor her. Camilla finds a gun Luke buried in the garden and shoots Charlie in the leg to escape.

She follows a final clue to a lock-up named St Luke’s and finds Luke alive. Meanwhile, Niall confronts George Louis at a lighthouse in Dungeness and shoots him to prevent another murder.

Seven years later, Niall and his wife Viv are reconciled and living in Colombia.

Luke and Camilla are back together in their Putney house with their fifteen-year-old daughter Polly.
