The narrative moves between the present day and the summer of 2001. In the present, Barb Bonifacio is a journalist in Seaside, Washington.
She writes for the local paper but makes her real living through anonymous reality TV recaps on a gossip blog.
Her life is disrupted by two events. First, a docuseries features Samuel Figg, the “Carnival Killer,” recanting his confession for the murder of her friend, Lorelei Glass. Second, a decomposed female body is found on a private beach.
Barb initially hopes the body is Kylie Kahl, a famous reality star who vanished six years prior. Instead, the victim is identified as Ingrid Larsen, another reality TV personality who disappeared in Oregon.
Barb discovers the couple who found Ingrid’s dog gave fake names from the show Ted Lasso.
Meanwhile, Barb’s former best friend, Nicolette Montes, now known as reality star Cole Lennox, is facing her own crisis. Her marriage is failing, and a public meltdown in Las Vegas sends her to rehab. She detours to Seaside to confront her past.
Unknown to them, Kylie Kahl is alive. She and another captured star, Sydney Carlisle, are held prisoner in a remote cabin by a masked man. The cabin once belonged to Marty Kieswetter, Lorelei’s stepbrother.
Barb and Cole reunite and reluctantly team up. They obtain Lorelei’s original autopsy report and learn a devastating truth. Lorelei did not die from the head injury they caused during a fight. She was strangled afterward.
They realize their high school English teacher, Daniel Hawksfield, murdered her. He had groomed them and gotten Nicolette pregnant.
He strangled Lorelei to protect his career and blackmailed Marty into hiding the body.
The investigation leads Barb, Cole, and Detective Cameron Wallace to Marty’s cabin.
There, they find Alice Chu, a police IT specialist, who is revealed to be the accomplice of the captor, “Owen Stark.” Owen killed Marty and stole his identity.
In a violent climax, Kylie Kahl beats Owen to death to save Barb’s life. The captives are rescued.
Daniel Hawksfield is arrested after Marty’s journals are found.
The truth finally frees Barb and Cole from their decades of guilt.
