Time Will Tell Summary: A Grandmother’s Secret Love
TL;DR: The Short Version
Georgia Anderson is a Toronto history teacher who has just lost her grandmother. When a posthumous letter arrives, it does not contain the usual final wishes. It reveals a hidden 1950s love affair and one unfinished request.
Time Will Tell by Hannah Bonam-Young follows what happens when Georgia honors that request and contacts a stranger in England. The novella moves between a buried metal box, late-night emails, and a small Nottinghamshire village.
The story is part of The Improbable Meet-Cute: Second Chances collection. It centers on family secrets, generational ties, and an unexpected long-distance connection.
- The hook: A grandmother’s confession sends her granddaughter digging up a time capsule buried in 1956.
- The obstacle: The box is locked, and the only key went to England with Martha Bennett.
- The turn: Emailing Martha’s grandson turns into something neither of them planned.
- The payoff: Two families meet over a rusted box and open a decades-old love story.
Expect cozy settings, witty banter, and an ending that closes the circle for both generations.

Time Will Tell Summary: The Full Story (Spoilers Ahead)
Spoiler warning: This section covers the plot, including the ending.
Georgia Anderson is twenty-seven and teaches history at a Toronto high school. Her grandmother Bonnie has died at ninety-three, and a letter written years earlier reaches Georgia afterward.
The letter states that Bonnie fell in love with a woman named Martha Bennett at the University of Toronto. The relationship lasted seven years but stayed hidden because of 1950s attitudes toward same-sex relationships.
Before Martha returned to England in 1956, the two buried a time capsule outside St. Peter’s cemetery. Bonnie asks Georgia to dig it up.
Georgia travels to the cemetery at night with her twin sister Phoebe for support. They unearth a rusted metal box, but it is locked.
Martha took the key with her to England. Georgia searches online and finds Martha’s grandson, Dr. Callum Lewis, in Lambley, Nottinghamshire.
On February 14, 2025, Georgia sends an email asking about the key. Callum replies, and the exchange continues.
The messages grow flirtatious, then move to late-night phone calls. Georgia learns more about Martha’s life in England, and Callum learns about Bonnie.
A month later, Georgia flies to England for March break with Phoebe and their cousin Madison. Callum meets them at the Nottingham train station.
The two recognize each other immediately, and their first kiss happens at the station. In Hannah Bonam-Young’s novella, the in-person reunion shifts the story from distance to proximity.
Meanwhile, Callum’s father Michael discovers the missing key. It was taped to the back of an old picture frame showing Bonnie and Martha’s former apartment.
The frame carried a handwritten inscription: where love lived. The families gather at Martha’s cottage to open the box together.
Inside are 1950s love letters, matching necklaces, photographs, and a heart-shaped locket. Martha’s Valentine’s card to Bonnie is among the contents.
One year later, Graham Lewis publishes a feature article about the two families. Georgia has accepted a primary school teaching position in Nottingham.
She prepares to move to England permanently. Callum tells his brother that without Bonnie and Martha, there would be no Georgia and Callum.
