Elara lives in the decaying city of Marrowbrae, where she buries plague victims alongside her mother and cares for her younger brother Daron, who is already marked by the rot. One night, a well-dressed stranger named Vale approaches her.

Vale claims to be King Kael’s steward and explains that the crown of Issoria was forged from a heartstring of Death. The crown demands a Queen’s Coronation—a blood sacrifice of the king’s wife—every fifteen years to keep the realm healthy.

Kael has refused to marry or sacrifice anyone for a year, trying to starve the curse. Instead, the rot has spread through the kingdom, leaving crops, animals, and people to decay from the inside out.

Vale offers Elara a bargain: go to the palace, make the king fall in love with her, and then let him kill her to break the curse. Desperate to save Daron, Elara accepts.

At the palace, she finds Kael in a horrifying state.

The crown heals him instantly whenever he wears it, but the curse immediately opens new wounds, trapping him in endless suffering.

Elara becomes his caretaker, cleaning his decaying flesh and learning his history. Kael’s father, King Merrick, forced him to watch the brutal sacrifice of his stepmother, Queen Ophelia.

That trauma made Kael determined to find another way to end the curse without killing a queen.

At the same time, Elara begins a dark, intense relationship with Vale, who continues to manipulate her from the shadows.

Through a secret diary and Kael’s drunken confession, Elara discovers that Vale is not a steward. Vale is Death itself, the supernatural entity who created the crown and the curse.

Kael had found a possible loophole using a distant relative for a rite, but Vale removed her to keep the curse alive.

In the final confrontation, Kael realizes he cannot break the curse on his own. He pulls the crown from his own head and forces it onto Elara’s, transferring the kingship and the curse to her.

Then he begs her to kill him. With Death looming, Elara slashes Kael’s throat.

The book ends with Elara standing on the dais, blood-spattered and crowned, declaring herself “crowned dead” as she takes the throne and the burden of the curse.
