The story begins in 1975. Joseph “Patch” Macauley, a poor thirteen-year-old boy, hears a scream in the woods near his home in Monta Clare, Missouri.
He finds Misty Meyer, the town’s wealthiest girl, being attacked by a man in a van. Patch attacks the man, allowing Misty to flee, but he is stabbed and taken instead.
Patch wakes up in a pitch-black concrete cell. A girl named Grace keeps him alive.
She gives him medicine, sings to him, and tells him stories about ballet, the ocean, and a white house in a place called Grace Falls.
The bond they form in the dark becomes the driving force of his life.

About a year later, Patch is found. His friend, Saint Brown, never stopped searching for him. She tracks down the kidnapper, a school photographer named Eli Aaron, and rescues Patch from a fire.
However, police and doctors tell Patch that Grace was a hallucination—a coping mechanism his mind created to survive the trauma.
Patch does not believe them. He nails newspaper over his windows to mimic the dark. He begins to paint, using his crude skills to capture Grace’s face so he never forgets it.
His obsession strains his relationship with Misty, who is wracked with guilt for running away. Her parents pay Patch to break up with her before she leaves for college. He does so, telling her he cannot stop looking for Grace.
By the 1980s, Patch is living on the road. He robs banks using a fake flintlock pistol to fund missing persons charities and his own search. He paints portraits of missing girls and sends them to their families.
Saint, now an FBI agent, tracks him down. She knows the “pirate” robber is Patch and wants to bring him in peacefully before someone shoots him. She catches him in Arizona and arrests him.
After serving six years in prison, Patch returns to Monta Clare in 1990. He learns Misty is dying of cancer and that they have a daughter named Charlotte. Misty leaves Charlotte in his custody. For the first time, Patch tries to build a stable life. He stops painting and buys a white house with blue shutters—just as Grace described it—to raise Charlotte.
Years later, Patch is sent back to prison for killing Saint’s abusive ex-husband. In prison, a dying inmate and a young prisoner named Tom White give him a new lead.
Tom reveals that Grace Falls, Alabama, is a real place that looks exactly like Patch’s paintings. Realizing Grace is alive, Patch executes a dangerous prison escape.
Simultaneously, Saint uncovers the truth about the original murders. The local doctor, Martin Tooms, was innocent of the crime he was sentenced for; he took the fall to protect Chief Nix, his secret lover, who killed an abusive man.
Saint stops Tooms’s execution, and Tooms confirms that Eli Aaron targeted pregnant girls.
Saint follows Patch to Grace Falls, Alabama. He finds the white house and Grace—who is revealed to be Eli Aaron’s daughter.
She had been held captive by her father and had snuck into Patch’s cell to help him. In a final confrontation in Aaron’s darkroom, Patch shoots and kills the man who ruined his life.
The novel ends in 2001. Saint and Charlotte go on a road trip to the coast. They find a sailboat flying a pirate flag. Charlotte runs into her father’s arms.
Patch has finally found peace, and Saint discovers his last painting: a portrait of a pirate and a beekeeper lying under the stars.

Who Will Enjoy All the Colors of the Dark?
Target Audience: This book suits readers who enjoy literary fiction with a strong crime plot. It is for those who like long, sweeping character arcs over fast-paced action.
Readers must be comfortable with dark subject matter, including child abduction and violence.
Pacing & Plotting: The book is a slow burn. Chris Whitaker uses short chapters to build momentum, but the focus is on the internal lives of Patch and Saint.
The narrative moves across twenty-five years, so the pace feels more like a saga than a thriller.
