The Dry Summary: A Chronological Account of Events (Spoilers)

Warning: This section contains spoilers for the entire book.

Luke Hadler is found dead in his utility vehicle near a clearing. His wife, Karen, and six-year-old son, Billy, are dead at the farmhouse. Baby Charlotte is found alive in her cot. The town believes Luke committed murder-suicide.

Aaron Falk receives a note from Gerry Hadler.

The note references a lie Falk and Luke told twenty years earlier about their whereabouts on the day Ellie Deacon drowned. Falk returns to Kiewarra.

After the funeral, Barb Hadler asks Falk to investigate. She does not believe Luke killed his family. Sergeant Greg Raco has doubts too. The shotgun shells found at the scene do not match ammunition found on the Hadler property.

Falk and Raco begin an informal investigation. They interview neighbor Jamie Sullivan. Sullivan’s alibi is false. He was secretly meeting Dr. Leigh. Sullivan is cleared.

Falk finds a library receipt in a book Karen borrowed. Karen wrote “Grant??” and Falk’s phone number on it. Initially, suspicion falls on Grant Dow. Further investigation reveals the note refers to a school grant.

Falk learns from the pub bartender that principal Scott Whitlam has gambling debts. Karen kept the school accounts. She discovered Whitlam was embezzling grant money.

Whitlam killed the Hadlers. He intercepted Luke on the road, knocked him unconscious, and drove his utility vehicle to the farm. He shot Karen and Billy. He staged Luke’s suicide and rode his bicycle back to town.

Falk and Raco confront Whitlam.

Whitlam flees into the bushland. He threatens to start a wildfire. Falk and Raco tackle him and smother the flames with their bodies. Whitlam is captured.

Before leaving Kiewarra, Falk visits the rock tree where he and Ellie used to meet.

He finds her backpack with a diary inside. The diary reveals Ellie’s father, Mal Deacon, abused and killed her. Grant Dow helped hide the body.
