The Guest by Emma Cline Summary: A Tense Hamptons Thriller

TL;DR: The Six-Day Countdown

A young woman is cast out of a luxurious Hamptons home with a broken phone, little cash, and a dangerous man hunting her.

Instead of returning to a bankrupt life in New York City, she decides to hide in plain sight among the wealthy for six days.

This is the premise of The Guest by Emma Cline.

Alex, a young woman with no money and no safe home, gets kicked out by her wealthy older boyfriend, Simon.

She refuses to leave the Hamptons and spends six days surviving through deception. She steals from beach club patrons, lies to strangers, and drifts between houses.

A dangerous man named Dom is searching for her.

The story ends at Simon’s Labor Day party, where Alex attempts one final return. The novel focuses on class, performance, and survival.

The Guest Summary: A Full Plot Overview

Spoiler Warning: This section reveals major plot points and the ending.

The Guest opens with Alex swimming in the ocean near Simon’s Hamptons estate. She has spent nearly two weeks living comfortably with the wealthy art dealer.

Her life in New York City has collapsed. She owes back rent, is blacklisted from hotel bars, and stole money and drugs from a dangerous man named Dom. Simon provides a temporary escape.

The situation unravels at a dinner party hosted by Helen, a wealthy friend of Simon’s. Alex drinks heavily and ends up in the pool with Helen’s younger husband, Victor.

Simon watches from the side with visible displeasure.

The next morning, Simon also learns that Alex damaged his car’s bumper. He tells Alex she must leave immediately. His assistant Lori buys her a train ticket back to the city.

Alex never gets on the train. She decides to stay in the Hamptons for six days until Simon’s Labor Day party. She believes Simon will forgive her and take her back.

Alex hitches a ride with a group of young house-sharers who mistake her for someone else. She crashes at their rental house, hooks up with a woman’s boyfriend, and gets thrown out the next morning.

Nicholas, the house manager for Simon’s wealthy friend George, picks Alex up from the highway. He lets her stay at George’s empty estate. They drink and do cocaine.

While looking at George’s art collection, Alex accidentally scratches a valuable painting. Nicholas panics and forces her to leave.

Alex tricks a six-year-old boy named Calvin Spencer to get into a private beach club. She charges food to the Spencer family’s account and steals cash from a locker room.

She then meets Margaret, a nineteen-year-old nanny, and stays at her family’s home. Alex swims naked in the pool and gets caught by the housekeeper. She leaves with Jack, a teenager she met on the beach.

Jack is the son of Robert, a wealthy Hollywood producer. He takes Alex to a tense dinner with his father. In the restroom, Alex runs into her old friend Dana.
