The story opens in the Kent retirement village of Coopers Chase. Elizabeth Best, a former spy, receives a letter from a man calling himself Marcus Carmichael. She knows that name well because she saw Marcus Carmichael buried in 1981.
The man behind the alias is Douglas Middlemiss, Elizabeth’s ex-husband and a fellow former intelligence officer.
Douglas has stolen £20 million in uncut diamonds from Martin Lomax, a money launderer for international cartels. Now the New York mafia and a Colombian drug cartel want those diamonds back.
Douglas needs Elizabeth’s help to stay alive until he can cash the diamonds in. Before she can decide how to respond, tragedy strikes closer to home. Ibrahim Arif, the club’s logical ex-psychiatrist, is brutally mugged in the nearby town of Fairhaven.
