Christmas Staycation Summary: Meghan Quinn’s Holiday Romp

TL;DR: A Fake Wedding in a Town That Never Stops Celebrating

Kringle, Colorado celebrates Christmas every day of the year.

That makes it the perfect stage for a family holiday gathering—and the worst possible place to hide a broken engagement.

In Christmas Staycation, Meghan Quinn returns to her Kringletown setting for a third holiday romance built on forced proximity, family chaos, and one extremely conspicuous silver Airstream.

The book follows a nurse named Taran Taylor, her meticulously budgeted ex-fiancé Guy, and Guy’s younger brother Nolan, who has been quietly in love with Taran for five years.

  • The setup: Taran and Guy have already broken up but pretend to be engaged so Guy can keep his year-end bonus and save face with their families.
  • The complication: The families announce a Christmas Eve wedding, and Nolan arrives uninvited in a restored 1979 Airstream RV.
  • The engine: Nolan sets out to stop the ceremony and win Taran, who has spent years organizing her life around other people’s expectations.

It is a low-angst, high-volume comedy built on outrageous set pieces, blunt humor, and a very public Christmas Eve meltdown.

Christmas Staycation Summary: What Happens in the Story

Spoiler warning: the following section describes the plot in full, including the ending.

Five years before the main story, Taran Taylor sits in a strip club holding a bottle of hand sanitizer and a stack of ones. A minor-league baseball player named Nolan Hart, working a shift as a male dancer, offers her a lap dance in exchange for the sanitizer.

Not long after, Taran starts dating Nolan’s older brother Guy, a hyper-frugal accountant with strong opinions about bed corners and jelly subscriptions. Nolan teases Taran at every family visit and quietly falls for her.

On New Year’s Eve, after Guy passes out from oysters and orange soda, Nolan kisses Taran at midnight. She panics and retreats. He does not.

A year later, Taran and Guy have quietly ended their engagement. They are too alike—rigid, cautious, tidy—and the romance has drained out of the arrangement entirely. Guy refuses to announce the split until his corporate Christmas bonus arrives, since he needs the money to move out.

Then Taran’s sister Storee and their great-aunt Cindy start discussing holiday plans. Cindy, looking pale and claiming frailty, says she cannot host anyone. Guy offers his and Taran’s home, and the mothers immediately begin planning a family Christmas Eve wedding.

Guy convinces Taran to play along. Their terms: share a bed without touching, keep strict boundaries, and mail out a “divorce” postcard in January.

In Meghan Quinn’s novel, both sets of parents then arrive, along with Reina’s destructive white cat Sprinkles, and the couple is pushed into a single queen bed.

Nolan rolls into the driveway driving Jolene, his refurbished 1979 silver Airstream. He reads the tension between Taran and Guy almost instantly and learns the truth about the breakup. With Taran officially available, he decides to stop the wedding.

His campaign is patient and specific.

He takes her for pizza and eggnog, buys her gingerbread cookies shaped in ways that scandalize her, and sleds with her down a mountain on a two-person boat sled. He recites her Virgo habits, her dislike of lateness, and her fondness for eggnog back to her.

When Taran slips off the roof while hanging Christmas lights, Nolan catches her. Guy trips over his own feet and mentions his sciatica.

After a night of drinking with locals Max and Betty, Taran turns up at the Airstream. Nolan nurses her hangover and then, over subsequent nights, the two begin a secret physical relationship in the RV and the den—including one memorable encounter involving a carton of eggnog.

Guy notices Taran pulling away and attempts to win her back with hot cocoa she does not like and corduroy pants.

Rejected, he secretly flies in Tatyana, Nolan’s uninhibited former fling, as a distraction. Tatyana takes one look at the situation and develops an interest in Guy instead.

Her arrival also brings a four-piece German polka band in lederhosen, who settle into the house and refuse to leave.

On the night before Christmas Eve, the families throw a joint bachelor and bachelorette party. Nolan performs a striptease in reindeer antlers.

Guy drinks too much spiked eggnog, attempts a moonwalk, and ends up on his knees in front of Taran’s mother making an unfortunate request.

On Christmas Eve, the whole group gathers on the front lawn to see Taran’s light display unveiled. A bicycle courier delivers Guy’s bonus envelope. Inside is a single coupon for a free eggnog latte.

Taran snaps. In front of both families, the polka band, and the neighbors, she announces that the wedding is fake, that she and Guy broke up months ago, that Tatyana has been in the guest room with Guy, that Nolan has been licking eggnog off her in the RV, and that her elaborate light display is a collection of anatomically suggestive shapes.

Guy faints mid-sentence. Sprinkles chews through a wire and starts a small fire. The polka band keeps playing.

Taran retreats to the reindeer barn at Evergreen Farm, where Nolan finds her and tells her he loves her without conditions. Storee then delivers a second revelation: Aunt Cindy was never ill. The pallor and the wrist marks came from nightly sessions with Dwight, Betty’s uncle.

On Christmas morning, Nolan gives Taran a custom “Hart 2 Heart” friendship bracelet and says the words plainly. They walk into the living room hand in hand. Guy, resting his head in Tatyana’s lap, gives his genuine blessing.

One year later, Taran and Nolan marry in the decorated reindeer barn at Evergreen Farm. Bob Krampus officiates in a Santa suit, the polka band plays, and Guy and Tatyana—married on New Year’s—are expecting twin daughters.

Taran has left her clinic job to run Nolan’s charity, Hart 2 Heart, which makes friendship bracelets for hospitalized children and pro athletes. The couple splits their time between San Francisco and Kringle.

Best Quotes

“She needs someone who is smooth, enigmatic, and pushes her out of the tiny, controlled box she demands to live in.”

“Because we don’t live near each other, unsure when I would see her again organically, this is a moment I can capitalize on, and to top it off, she told me already that this Christmas was going to suck, so why not bring her joy.”

“Security means so much to you. You hate when people are late because you consider time to be the most valuable commodity, and it’s the one thing in the world you can never get back. And most importantly, you have the softest fucking lips I’ve ever kissed, and I haven’t stopped thinking about them since I got a small taste of them on New Year’s Eve.”

“I see how tightly wound you are, how you try to put on this perfect façade every time I’m around, and I’ve always seen right through it. I see the flaws, I see the insecurity, and I fucking eat it up. It makes you real. It makes you sexy.”

“You have given your life to other people—whether it’s your job and your patients, your sister and Aunt Cindy…fucking Guy. I think it’s about time you be a little selfish, Taran. I think it’s time you think about yourself and what you want.”

“That’s what happens when you become someone’s priority.”

“We haven’t been together for months, and this wedding? It’s a sham. The whole thing is a sham. Yup, we’ve been pretending to be together for the sake of all of you, so you could have your good old-fashioned family Christmas wedding with your barn and your holly and your hap-hap-happy reindeer.”
