With Hearts of Flame Summary
Spoiler Warning: This section reveals major plot points and the ending of the book.
The story opens in the aftermath of the devastating battle at Veilmar. Blake Drakharrow’s body and mind remain under the control of Vorago, an ancient malevolent red Inferni dragon who seized him through a dark bonding ritual.
Medra Pendragon works with Professor Rodriguez, Sankara, Visha, Theo Drakharrow, and Healer Elycia to find a way to save Blake. She also reveals a truth she has kept hidden: she is half-fae, a fugitive from the realm of Aercanum.
Her mother, Orcades Le Fay, the former Queen of Camelot, communicates with Medra through dreams. Orcades warns that Viktor Drakharrow and his allies are working to collapse the Veil from the northern border.
Meanwhile, the ancient black Duskdrake dragon Nyxaris has unlocked a human form. He deepens his bond with his rider, Florence Shen, a blightborn alchemy student. Their relationship moves from tension to open devotion on the starry beaches of Bloodwing.

Headmaster Rodriguez shares an ancient manuscript with Medra: the Prophecy of the Pure Maiden. It speaks of a marked maiden whose choice will either sustain or destroy the Veil. The prophecy has been guarded for generations by the Emberwatch.
Medra and her allies craft a plan to free Blake from Vorago. Florence rides Nyxaris to lure the Inferni into range of emberfern-coated crossbow bolts. During the aerial battle, Vorago injures Visha and knocks Florence into the sea, where Viktor’s forces capture her.
Medra reaches Blake and plunges an enchanted dagger into his chest, entering his mindscape. There, her glowing magical creature Neville sings a healing melody that reconciles Blake’s shattered soul. Medra drinks Blake’s blood directly from his neck, sealing a permanent soulmate bond and severing Vorago forever.
Reunited, Medra and Blake return to Bloodwing. Political tensions boil over when Elaria Avari arrives seeking to reinstate tyrannical highblood traditions. Her grandson Kage defies her, publicly forming a soul-bonded triad with Lysander Orphos and Regan Pansera.
A dwarven delegation from Thrazdummar reveals that their ancestors helped bind four stone dragons to reinforce the Veil over a century ago. With House Mortis having captured a dwarven lord to steal his blood, a multi-species squad is assembled to venture underground.
The expedition team descends into cathedral-like caverns filled with lethal traps and ancient wards. They include Medra, Blake, Visha, Rodriguez, Sankara, Magda Stonefist, Zaira Bloodshield, Kazmyn, Neville, and Hawl, a massive Bearkin warrior sent by Medra’s aunt and uncle from Aercanum.
Above ground, Florence is held in Viktor’s dungeons, forcibly soul-bound to him. A highblood student named Lunaya, bound to the corrupted dragon Molindra, makes a choice. She releases her brother Persis and the captive children, ending her own life and Molindra’s to deny Viktor their power.
Nyxaris, Lysander, Kage, and Regan infiltrate Viktor’s burning estate. In the sky, Nyxaris battles Viktor’s red Inferni dragon. On the ground, Regan faces Viktor Drakharrow, the man who once abused her. She stabs him to death, ending his reign of terror.

Deep in the dwarven vault, House Mortis forces ambush Medra’s squad. Blake kills Silvio Santos in revenge for his cruelties. Professor Alastor Vane casts a lethal blood-magic curse at Medra. Hawl steps in front of the spell, taking the full force and dying to save her.
Grief and rage trigger Medra’s dormant fae fire magic. She annihilates the remaining attackers. When Zaira Bloodshield tries to force a fatal ritual, Visha strikes her down. Kazmyn uses his sister’s blood on the runic panel to unseal the inner vault. Medra unleashes dragon fire on the ancient doors, securing the clutch of unhatched dragon eggs.
At the crumbling Veil, the true meaning of the Emberwatch Prophecy becomes clear. The marked maiden was never Medra or Lunaya. It was Regan Pansera, whose bloodline carries the blood of all Four Great Houses.
Only an offering of blood can repair the Veil and prevent both worlds from collapsing into darkness. Regan willingly gives her life at the Veil, sacrificing herself to preserve the realms.
One year later, Bloodwing Academy has been transformed. Headmistress Sankara and Professor Rodriguez lead a school where highbloods and blightborns study side by side without thrall-bindings or forced feeding.
At the Graduation Ball, Blake establishes the Regan Pansera Award, an annual scholarship for promising highblood and blightborn women. Medra and Blake then travel to the Somnaria Institute in the Sable Isles.
There, they reunite with Florence, now happily pregnant, and Nyxaris, who teaches dragon history and anatomy. Young Persis plays alongside newly hatched baby dragons, including a sweet red hatchling named Molly.
Kazmyn and Florence activate the ancient green runic archways, establishing a permanent gateway between Sangratha and Aercanum. Medra and Blake decide to stay until Florence gives birth, looking forward to a peaceful future across connected worlds.
