TL;DR
Sydney Shaw’s dating life is a disaster until a medical examiner named Tom Brewer saves her from an assault.
He’s handsome, attentive, and seemingly too good to be true.
At the same time, women in Manhattan are being murdered, their hair taken as trophies.
Sydney’s detective ex-boyfriend Jake investigates, and all roads point toward the new man in her life — except the truth is far messier and stretches back to a small-town nightmare twenty years earlier.
The story weaves a dual timeline of young Tom and a girl named Daisy Driscoll, whose obsession with him triggered the first killings and ultimately resurfaces to frame everyone Sydney trusts.
- Central twist: The real serial killer is not Tom but Daisy, hiding under an alias in Sydney’s inner circle.
- Moral tangle: Tom is not innocent. He killed his abusive father and, by the end, chooses to vanish with Daisy after she murders again.

The Boyfriend Summary: A Full Breakdown of the Double Timeline
WARNING: Complete spoilers below. This section recounts the entire narrative, including the ending.
Present-day Manhattan.
Sydney Shaw is thirty-four, an accountant, and exhausted by the app Cynch. After a traumatic date with a man named Kevin who tries to force himself on her, a passerby intervenes and knocks Kevin out cold.
The rescuer later finds her on the same app and introduces himself as Tom Brewer, a medical examiner.
They grow close quickly, but danger is already circling. Sydney’s neighbor Bonnie is discovered murdered in her apartment, her hair cut off.

Detective Jake Sousa, Sydney’s ex, leads the case and confirms a serial killer is at work.
Parallel to this, a “Before” timeline follows a teenage Tom in a grim town near Buffalo.
He lives under the threat of his alcoholic father, Bill, and is consumed by his love for a girl named Daisy Driscoll. After Bill threatens Daisy, Tom kills him with a kitchen knife.
His friend Slug helps bury the body. Around this time, two local girls, Brandi and Alison, are murdered, and the town panics.
Back in the present, Sydney finds Bonnie’s black scrunchie hidden inside Tom’s bedroom. She also discovers he contacts her through a burner phone.
Convinced Tom is the killer, she hands a water bottle with his fingerprints to Jake. The prints match those at Bonnie’s crime scene, but Tom is released because he has a hospital alibi for the exact time of the murder.
The final rupture happens at the apartment of Sydney’s friend Gretchen. Sydney finds a bag of human hair in the toilet. Gretchen reveals herself as Daisy Driscoll.
For two decades, she has stalked Tom and murdered any woman he showed interest in, leaving the locks of hair as signatures.
In the “Before” timeline, it was Daisy who killed Brandi and Alison, then lured Slug to a Dairy Queen parking lot and killed him, framing him posthumously for all the murders.
In the present, Daisy murders her own fiancé, the building super Randy, intending to pin the serial killings on him. Tom arrives, having already called the police.
Daisy begs him to flee with her.
Tom, realizing his own darkness aligns with hers, agrees on one condition: she must stop killing innocent people. They disappear together.
One month later, Sydney has reunited with Jake. She receives an anonymous letter from Tom containing a lock of hair and a note confirming he killed the real Kevin — the man who had been stalking her.
Justice, bent and broken, lingers in the air.

Summary by Chapter: A Story Grouped by Narrative Movements
SPOILERS BELOW. Grouping chapters into logical arcs rather than single-line summaries.
The Rescuer and the First Body (Prologue – Chapter 12). The novel begins with a prologue inside young Tom’s mind, fixated on Daisy and blood.
Then the story jumps to Sydney’s terrifying date with Kevin and her rescue by a man she will later know as Tom. Bonnie, her neighbor and serial-dating confidante, is introduced and quickly murdered.
The discovery of Bonnie’s body brings Detective Jake back into Sydney’s life, setting a paranoid tone as the hunt for a hair-collecting killer begins.
The Weight of the Past (Chapters 13 – 24). The “Before” timeline expands: Tom and Daisy’s high school world darkens with the murder of Brandi.
In the present, Sydney attends Bonnie’s funeral and spots Kevin lurking. Young Tom’s abusive home life escalates, and Daisy’s best friend Alison starts blackmailing him, tightening the noose that will snap in the past timeline.
The Doctor Is In (Chapters 25 – 38). Sydney and Tom officially date. He discloses his profession and shows a clinical fascination with her bleeding disorder.
Jake warns Sydney about the active serial killer and tells her to stay off dating apps. In the past, Tom reaches a breaking point with his father, resulting in Bill’s murder and the pact with Slug to hide the body.
Hidden Evidence and a Shattered Trust (Chapters 39 – 52). Sydney begins noticing cracks: the burner phone, Tom’s intense reactions, and finally the scrunchie in his bedroom.
She flees his apartment in terror and gives his fingerprints to the police. In the past, Daisy manipulates Slug into a final meeting, isolating him for what becomes the ultimate frame-up.
Unmasking and Vanishing (Chapters 53 – Epilogue). Tom’s alibi clears him, leaving Sydney cornered.
The real killer, Gretchen/Daisy, reveals herself in a bloody confrontation, kills Randy, and pleads with Tom to escape. He joins her.
An epilogue shows Sydney receiving Tom’s letter, the lock of hair, and the confirmation that Kevin is dead. The pair’s twisted pact seals the story on a note of unresolved moral ambiguity.
