Among the Burning Flowers Summary: A Kingdom Falls
Introduction
The Kingdom of Yscalin is burning. In Samantha Shannon’s Among the Burning Flowers, a volcanic capital chokes under red haze while an ancient evil stirs beneath the mountains.
The novel follows two women: Princess Marosa Vetalda, a prisoner in her own palace, and Estina Melaugo, a starving outlaw hunted for her crimes.
Their stories collide with the awakening of Fýredel, a High Western wyrm of terrifying power.
This standalone prequel to The Priory of the Orange Tree focuses on the days before the world falls apart.

Among the Burning Flowers Summary: The Deep Dive (Spoilers)
Warning: Major spoilers for the entire plot follow.
The story begins in spring, CE 1003, in Cárscaro. Princess Marosa Vetalda lives under constant watch. Her father, King Sigoso III, controls her letters and her freedom. She secretly keeps a silver mirror necklace from her dead mother, Queen Sahar.
That heirloom connects Marosa to Dwyn, a forbidden Southern faith. Her only hope is marriage to Prince Aubrecht of Mentendon. But the betrothal has stalled for years.
Far from the palace, Estina Melaugo fights for survival. She kills a lindworm for a village woodcutter in exchange for bread. She is malnourished and isolated.
Captain Gian Harlowe tracks Melaugo down. He offers her a place on his ship, the Rose Eternal. Melaugo refuses at first. She cannot leave her lover, Liyat of Nzene.
In Cárscaro, King Sigoso announces Marosa will marry Aubrecht in autumn. But the same day, earthquakes crack Mount Fruma open. Ancient wyverns swarm the sky.
King Sigoso sends his cousin as a decoy. The wyrm Fýredel burns the man alive. Then the king goes into the mountain. He returns with ash-grey eyes and declares Yscalin a Draconic Kingdom.
Melaugo and Liyat are in Ortégardes when the wyvern attacks. They escape through a storm drain and ride toward the coast. The harbor is already burning.
They swim out to the Rose Eternal. Harlowe’s crew drives a wyvern back with cannon fire. Melaugo joins the crew and watches Yscalin burn.
Aubrecht learns of the betrayal from Mentendon. He tries to send mercenaries to rescue Marosa. Every mission fails. The mountain passes are blocked.
In Cárscaro, Marosa finds proof that her father murdered Queen Rosarian of Inys with basilisk venom. King Sigoso also confesses to killing Queen Sahar. His wife had tried to escape with Marosa.
Lord Wilstan Fynch, the Inysh ambassador, gives Marosa a key to secret water passages. She meets Jondu, a Southern protector, in Fýredel’s lair. Jondu gives her an iron box and tells her about a hidden tunnel.
In retaliation, King Sigoso hangs Jondu, Marosa’s guard Ermendo, and her lady Yscabel. Cockatrices eat the bodies at the Gate of Niunda.
Marosa tries to help Fynch escape with the iron box. He tries to infect himself with the Draconic plague by touching the king’s skin. But he cannot do it.
Fynch dies in the mountains, mauled by beasts. Marosa retrieves the box and returns to the palace alone. Aubrecht formally annuls their betrothal.
Two years later, Fýredel takes flight. A second Grief of Ages begins. Marosa puts on the iron wyrm helm.
She sits on the obsidian throne to welcome the new Inysh ambassadors. She pretends to serve the Nameless One. Secretly, she plans to smuggle Jondu’s box out of Yscalin.
The ending of Among the Burning Flowers is deliberately unresolved. It connects directly to the opening of The Priory of the Orange Tree. Samantha Shannon ends the novel with a small spark of resistance under heavy armor.
