In Stacia Stark’s dark fantasy, Arvelle Dacien lives in the Thorn district of Senthara’s capital, Lysoria. She works as a bodyguard to buy lung tonics for her twin brother Evren, who suffers from a mining accident.
Her plan collapses when the vampire Bran poisons the local tonic supply. Bran takes her brothers Gerith and Evren hostage and ties Arvelle to a magical leash. He orders her to conquer the Sundering, infiltrate the Praesidium Guard, and assassinate Emperor Vallius Corvus.
Arvelle recruits Leon, the father of her dead best friend Kassia, as her guardant. Inside the imperial ludus, she shares barracks with Maeva and faces Baldric and Hester. She also discovers the Primus is Tiernon, her childhood love who disappeared six years earlier.
In her first trial, she defeats Maximus and spares him. In the second, she kills a chained griffon named Antigrus to end its suffering. The griffon’s magic passes to Arvelle afterward.
Rorrik, the emperor’s eldest son, later uses illusions to guide her to murder Tiberius Cotta, a Syndicate ally. Arvelle’s third trial is a naval battle with flesh-eating kelpies. She rescues Calena during the chaos.
Hester drugs Maeva in the arena, and Arvelle illegally enters the fight. Maeva kills Baldric, Arvelle beheads him, and Rorrik tries to execute Arvelle until Tiernon stops him. Arvelle also investigates green-eyed murders inside the ludus.
