In Heather Fawcett’s novel, Agnes Aubert runs Le Ami de Chat, also called Cat Friend, on Rue Sainte-Roseline.
A reckless daytime duel between magicians shatters her windows and blows a hole in the wall. Agnes must rehouse forty-eight rescue cats before the Canadian winter arrives.
She finds a spacious old shop on Rue des Hirondelles. The rent is cheap, and the landlord’s representative is a nervous young man named Yannick Abrams. Despite warnings from her neighbor Oksana, Agnes signs the lease.
Strange things begin in the new shop.
The cold stone oven smells of fresh pastries at midnight. Well-dressed strangers disappear through a hidden trapdoor in the back room.
A police detective named Laurent Rouzet starts asking questions about the absent landlord, rumored to be Havelock Renard, the Witch King.

During a blizzard, Agnes’s cat Banshee alerts her to a break-in. A Parisian magician named Valérie tears the shelter apart while searching for Havelock and a legendary time-travel book.
Havelock appears barefoot in navy pajamas. A magical battle erupts, and he blasts Valérie into the storm.
Havelock then relocates the entire shop interior to Rue Sainte-Sophie. Agnes strikes a bargain with him: she catalogues his chaotic basement of Artefacts, and he places mild temporary health charms on her cats.
Donations and adoptions rise. Agnes also learns the truth about the near-apocalypse.
Havelock did not try to end the world. Valérie stole his teenage spell and unleashed it to intimidate her rivals. Havelock sacrificed part of himself in the Rivenwood to create a twelve-layer partitioning spell that saved humanity.
Detective Laurent reveals he is secretly a magician. He warns Agnes that a new bylaw will allow police to raid the shelter. Agnes is arrested and later released on bail.
Valérie then attacks the shop with phantasmal ice horses and frozen wild roses. She wounds Havelock and steals the cat His Majesty.
Agnes finds the blank time-travel book hidden in the stone oven. She and her sister Élise travel three years into the past. Agnes briefly reunites with her late husband Robin on Mount Royal. She finds the younger Havelock, earns his trust, and secures a magic-absorbing lantern once owned by Alice Vortigern.
Back in the present, Havelock uses the lantern to drain magical power from Valérie and her apprentices. The public rallies behind the shelter.
The bylaw is deferred, Laurent adopts a cat, and Havelock reveals a portal to a Paris fire escape. Agnes steps onto the ladder with him.
