The Descent: A Reliquary Summary with Spoilers

Warning: This section contains major spoilers for the entire plot of Reliquary.

Claire Sutherland’s fiancé, Elias Ashbury, dies from a brain aneurysm. His neurologist finds bizarre, tentacle-shaped scarring in his brain.

Claire is stalked by a mysterious black car. She then receives an invitation from Elias’s stepmother, Audrey, to attend the funeral on Harrow Point island.

On the island, Claire meets the Ashbury family. They are wealthy and strange. Their fortune comes from Ashbury Marinography, a deep-sea engineering company.

Claire is housed in a tiny, windowless room. The family shows her the Poseidon, a submarine where couples traditionally spend their wedding night.

She witnesses disturbing events. A yacht sacrifice. A maid eating a severed human finger. She tries to flee but is stopped by Ash, Elias’s estranged brother.

Ash reveals the truth in a room full of tabloids. The family worships a god called the Leviathan. They sacrifice people to it for their success.

Claire was chosen years ago. As a child, trapped in a sinking boat, she promised the ocean “whatever you want” to be saved. The god listened.

Ash tries to drive Claire off the island. They are attacked by mutated staff and a projection of Elias. The car crashes into the ocean.

Claire wakes up bound in an underwater cathedral. The family performs a ritual called the Ascension. Mutated “skins” kiss her, leaving acid burns.

The god, using Elias’s form, heals her. It promises she will be its new, permanent skin. Ash is drugged and forced into a sham marriage with Claire on the submarine.

The next day, the family takes Claire to the cliff. The Leviathan emerges. Just as they are about to throw Claire in, Ash runs forward.

Ash sacrifices himself. He and the god meld into a giant, electric-eyed hybrid entity. The creature frees the mutated skins.

The skins devour two of the uncles. Wellington V, the patriarch, falls to his death. Claire pushes Audrey over the cliff in revenge.

Claire, Theo, and Dierdre escape on a yacht. A year later, Claire lives in Maine, her left eye glowing blue. She feels a pull toward the sea.

She boards the Poseidon and descends.

She reunites with Ash, now in a mostly human form. Together, they decide to hunt the corrupt sister company, Rhodes-Hodge.

Who Will Enjoy Reliquary by Hannah Whitten?

This book is for readers who appreciate atmospheric horror that builds slowly before erupting into visceral action. The pacing starts as a slow-burn mystery and shifts into a fast, intense final act.

It suits those who like stories with dark family secrets and endings that are more vengeful than purely heroic.

Readers who enjoyed the claustrophobic, isolated tension of The Luminous Dead by Caitlin Starling may also appreciate the underwater dread in Reliquary.
