Deathbringer by Sonia Tagliareni Summary: A Dark Academia Mystery
TL;DR: A Twin’s Death, A Mage’s Debt
Twelve years.
That is how long Olivia Corvi pretended to be a death mage at the Gorhail Institute of Magic, hiding the fact that she had no magic at all.
Her twin sister Viola, who truly hears the dead, spent those same years keeping her own forbidden power quiet inside a funeral home in Albion.
Then Olivia is found dead by the lake, her body marked by claws and her heirloom relic missing.
Deathbringer by Sonia Tagliareni follows Viola into the academy she was raised to avoid, while a High Magus of Poison named Sylas Archyr investigates murders that look exactly like her sister’s.
- What it is: A dark academia fantasy romance set in the Ten Provinces of Draterra, told in alternating first-person chapters from Viola and Sylas.
- The setup: A nonmagical twin dies while impersonating a death mage, forcing her secretly magical sister into the academy that would execute her.
- The hook: Three students murdered on the same night, three stolen relics, and a 500-year-old rogue mage pulling strings from inside an ancient artifact.
- Core themes: Grief, institutional prejudice against crossmages, family loyalty against state law, and magic that always takes more than it gives.
- Ending note: The book closes on a hard cliffhanger, with one protagonist alive, one imprisoned, and one waking in the Underworld.

Deathbringer Book Summary
Warning: major spoilers ahead.
In November 1939, Viola Corvi works at a funeral home in Albion and hides her unregistered Mortemagi magic. Her twin Olivia has spent twelve years at Gorhail posing as a death mage to protect her.
Olivia is found dead at Little Lake Albion, clawed and with a fake relic missing. At the institute, High Magus Sylas Archyr is investigating the murder of illusionist Victor Carver, whose body carries identical claw marks.
Sylas’s brother Beau is implicated when his aspier’s frost venom turns up in Victor’s blood. Beau and Sylas slip into Gorhail Woods after curfew, where poachers ambush them and kill Beau.
In Albion, Viola is attacked by her mortician friend Mara, who has been turned into a mind-controlled puppet through blood magic. Viola escapes into the forest but suffers near-fatal claw wounds.
Principal Grand Master Priya Parrish and Overseer Rodric Paltro release Sylas from DOTS custody on one condition. He must use his healing aspier Railesza to save the dying Viola.
The healing bite forges a permanent mage bond between them. Once recovered, Viola is blackmailed into enrolling at Gorhail under threat of execution as an unregistered crossmage.
Viola and Sylas discover that three students died on the same night. Olivia, Victor, and Beau were all killed, and all of their heirloom relics were stolen.
Viola descends the Poisoned Stairwell into the catacombs beneath Gorhail, guided by the ghost of Ysenia Faro, the Sixth Founder. Using the Cardot family relic, she materializes the spirits of Victor and Beau.
Victor reveals he faked his death with frost venom to escape the conduits, then was murdered by a Mortemagi puppeteer. Viola weaves both ghosts back into their preserved bodies at the Dearly Departed funeral home.
Priya Parrish then exposes the price of that act: resurrection halves a Mortemagi’s lifespan. Two resurrections leave Viola with only two or three years left.
Student Fable Rowan is later found dead in the gardens, her dustmaker pen relic missing. Sylas’s Firstline patrol is ambushed in the woods by poachers and undead, with heavy casualties.
An old 1919 Gorhail photograph links every victim to one group of former classmates. Viola, Sylas, Beau, and Lyria trace the murders to Overseer Aurelia Delaney.

Twenty years earlier, Delaney’s daughter Willow died in a ritual that tethered her soul to Rafael Grimm. Grimm is a 500-year-old rogue Mortemagi crossmage sealed inside Faro’s Cuff.
Delaney has been murdering the descendants of the mages who sealed her daughter. Six specific heirloom relics are needed to free Willow.
Delaney is not in control. Her subordinate, Magister Lorne Lawton, is possessed by Grimm, who intends to sacrifice mother and daughter to break his own tether.
At a secluded cottage, Grimm slits Delaney’s throat over the collected relics, fulfilling a prophecy. He then materializes in his true form and executes Willow.
Ysenia Faro possesses Viola’s body and wrests Faro’s Cuff away from Grimm, stripping him of his invulnerability. Enraged, Grimm uses blood magic to bury Sylas deep beneath the earth and flees.
DOTS arrests Viola for Sylas’s murder and the theft of his aspiers. In a Riverview prison cell she finds a custom metal cuff Sylas left for her, inscribed “This life and the next.”
She clips it to her arm, and Ysenia’s ghost whispers that she will show her the way. In the epilogue, Sylas wakes in the Underworld beside Ysenia, preparing to seek an audience with the God of Death and break the rules to return to Viola.
