An Arcane Inheritance Summary: Dark Academia Fantasy
TL;DR: The Short Version
Warren University markets itself as the ninth Ivy League school, and its Godwin Scholarship offers a full ride to students who could never otherwise afford its halls.
Ellory Morgan, a twenty-one-year-old Jamaican immigrant from Queens, is one of them.
An Arcane Inheritance by Kamilah Cole places her inside a campus of legacy wealth, Gothic spires, and memory lapses she cannot explain.
What starts as academic pressure and a rivalry with a founding-family senior becomes something stranger: storms that swallow landmarks, a symbol that burns onto her neck, and blank spots in her own recollection.
The novel moves through secret societies, occult history, and the price magic charges its users.

An Arcane Inheritance Summary
Spoiler warning: the following section recounts the plot in full, including the ending.
Ellory Morgan lives with her Aunt Carol in Astoria, Queens, working multiple jobs and postponing college for lack of money.
A full-ride Godwin Scholarship to Warren University arrives without warning, and she accepts. Three weeks into her first semester as a political science major, she is exhausted, isolated, and already clashing with Hudson Graves in constitutional law.
Hudson is a senior and the heir to one of Warren’s founding families. Their arguments are sharp and public, and neither gives ground. Then Ellory walks into a storm that erases landmarks around her, and her sense of reality begins to slip.
At Bancroft Field, a soccer ball stops in midair at her command, leaving a scorched circle in the grass. A backward “E” tattoo appears on her neck, the alchemical symbol for there exists. She starts recording everything in a notebook.
At an off-campus party hosted by Hudson, Ellory meets Liam Blackwood, a lacrosse captain, along with several other minority scholarship students.
She also wanders into Hudson’s bedroom and finds his annotated collection of bell hooks. Despite their hostility, Hudson invites her to an exclusive monthly salon run by political science professor Preston Colt.
In Cover Story bookstore, Ellory finds a note in her own handwriting tucked behind a shelf: hudson will help. She confronts him in Graves Library, and he believes her.
Together they find a sealed room in the founders’ museum that exposes Warren’s origins as the School for the Unseen Arts. Ellory then holds a midnight séance with her best friend and RA, Taiwo “Tai” Daniels, and Tai’s partner, Cody Flores.

During the séance, Ellory’s spirit leaves her body and witnesses the ghost-memory of Malcolm Mayhew, a Godwin Scholar murdered in 1983 by a figure with a silver-eyed crow tattoo. A masked enforcer later ambushes her on a campus path and warns her to stop digging.
Ellory begins casually dating Liam while continuing her investigation in secret. She notices that Hudson’s roommate, Warren Communiqué editor Boone Priestley, has the alchemical symbol for salt tattooed on his wrist.
At Tucker Farm, Ellory becomes lost in a shifting maze inside the orchard and conjures orbs of light from her palms. Hudson finds her and leads her out.
Back at Bancroft Field, she deliberately restores the dead soil to green grass. The spell works, but it triggers a migraine and she realizes the price: magic consumes her own memories. The backward “E” burns onto her neck again.
When the masked enforcer attacks her in her dorm stairwell, Hudson drives the attacker off with violet fire. He admits his family has magic and hid it from him.
Ellory’s research turns up the Old Masters, a clandestine elite tied to the founders, the Godwin Scholarship, and classified CIA projects. Boone then confronts her inside a constructed liminal space and confirms he is a reluctant member.
Boone explains that the Old Masters use the scholarship to recruit low-income students with wild magic and drain them.
During a divination session at Riverside Campus, Ellory touches Hudson and shares a vision of the Lost Eight — eight minority scholarship students who vanished over decades — with Professor Colt standing among them.
At Colt’s next salon, he offers Ellory a spring student assistantship. Shortly afterward, Hudson vanishes completely. Liam, Tai, Cody, the library archives, and every database have no record that he ever existed.
Ellory drives to Colt’s estate and confronts him. Colt drops his facade and tells her the truth: she has been trapped in a siphoned dreamworld for three years.
The Old Masters — university leaders, wealthy alumni, and founding scions including Colt, Nathaniel Graves, Chip O’Connor, and Miles Clairborne — keep wild magic students suspended in stasis inside a hidden underground tower at Riverside Campus.
They siphon the students’ ancestral magic to sustain their wealth and influence. To keep the captives compliant, the spell builds a simulated college loop moderated by Colt, and Liam Blackwood was a magical construct designed to keep Ellory distracted.
Ellory flees toward Riverside Campus. Dream-Liam tries to stop her, then understands what he is and holds back the enforcers so she can reach the tower.
Inside the hidden schoolhouse tower, she climbs to the rooftop and finds the physical bodies of herself, Tai, Cody, and dozens of other students floating in glowing blue orbs.
The Old Masters arrive with Hudson at their side, apparently aligned with his father Nathaniel.
Hudson touches Ellory’s wrist and uses their established spell connection to restore her three years of real memories. He had been playing a double game the entire time, planting the tattoo, notes, and spell castings inside her dream loops so she would eventually wake.

With her memories restored, Ellory channels her wild magic alongside the spirits of the Lost Eight and the newly awakened students. Together they shatter the containment orbs and sever the siphon.
Ellory turns the siphoning magic back on the Old Masters, stripping their stolen power, erasing their memories, and collapsing the tower. The spirits of the Lost Eight are put to rest.
Months later, in the spring semester of her real freshman year, Ellory works as a student assistant to a now-powerless Colt and writes for The Warren Communiqué. She uses minor wild magic to pay off debt and secure heart medication for Aunt Carol.
The real Hudson Graves approaches her study table in Graves Library, his natural dark curls replacing the bleached-blond dye of the dream. They no longer share three years of loop history, but the intellectual chemistry returns immediately.
They exchange phone numbers, and Ellory prepares to begin their story for real.

Quotes from An Arcane Inheritance
“The political science major at Warren University was a prestigious murder weapon.”
“I don’t want to be better than you because I have information you don’t, Morgan. I want to be better than you because I’m obviously better than you.”
“There is magic in the bones of this world: in the soil and the waves, in the air and the billions of souls that pollute it. It lives and changes, fades and lingers.”
“I’m not part of their spell, Ellory—I’m part of you. I am your creation. And I’ll hold them back as long as I can. You go. End this.”
“Loving you is the best thing I have ever done. As easy as taking a breath. You’re not a weakness, Ellory. You’re my strength. The best part of me, the best person I know.”
“Warren University started as a joke. Not to the founders—three vainglorious men who had been born with the world in their hands and their futures glittering like gold coins eager to be spent—but to the people of Hartford.”
