The Book of Blood and Roses Summary: The Full Story
Spoiler warning: this section covers the plot in full, including the ending.
Rebecca Charity arrives in Inverness disguised as Cassie Smith, carrying false identification, contact lenses, red hair extensions, and hidden weapons.
Callisto has assigned her to Tynahine University, where she is placed in room 904 of Tynarrich Hall.
Her roommate turns out to be Aliz Astra, the white-haired heir to Europe’s most powerful vampire dynasty. Rebecca hides her scent with garlic supplements and gel to prevent her rare Type-S blood from triggering a feeding response.
She befriends human student Stephan Lazaar and vampire students Ife and Julia, then begins investigating attacks on local girls. That investigation leads her to the Red Ribbons, a supremacist cult meeting in a hidden gallery beneath campus.
While researching grimoires in the Kinsnet Library archive, Rebecca is stabbed in the neck by a Red Ribbon member named Jannet. The dagger carries vampire venom, and Rebecca collapses in room 904.
Aliz saves her by using her own blood to neutralize the venom. Because the act occurred under a full moon, it accidentally creates a Familiar’s mark—a thorned vine tattoo that winds around Rebecca’s neck and chest.
The mark produces an irresistible magnetic pull between them, and Rebecca now has to hide two secrets instead of one. She and Aliz begin researching Familiars together, hoping to undo the bond.
Night Dean Faust Nocth summons Rebecca and reveals he already knows she is a Callisto hunter. He received her recruitment records directly from Penny, and he tells her that The Book of Blood and Roses was written centuries ago by Ada Astra, Aliz’s dead sister.

Rebecca’s relationship with Aliz shifts from hostility into intimacy. Through the ancient vampire Elia Palau, she also learns that the entrance to Ada’s secret library lies past a hidden altar beneath the campus.
Penny then orders Rebecca to infiltrate a blood party at Inverness Castle hosted by the vampire Eugene Trellis. Rebecca fights through guards, frees dozens of human victims, and kills several attackers.
Outside the castle, Elia intercepts her with a revelation: Callisto is secretly allied with the radical Vassals cult.
The Feast of the Parched, the attack that killed Rebecca’s parents in Wishaw four years earlier, was arranged to traumatize her into a weapon because of her Type-S blood.
Professor Sven Gustavsson is exposed as the Vassal who tasted her father’s blood that night. Using a blood-and-candle ritual with Elia and Aliz, Rebecca enters Ada’s secret library.
Ada’s ghost explains that the book is not a physical volume but Ada’s own living memory.
The cure for a Familiar’s contract requires both the human and the vampire to consume the freshly disembodied heart of an enemy beneath a full lunar eclipse.
At the annual Halloween Ball, Rebecca dresses as an angel with hidden silver daggers and plans to target Gustavsson. Penny arrives unexpectedly, attacks her, and demands the book’s location.
Rebecca flees into the hedge maze after Gustavsson, who boasts about his role in her parents’ murders and Callisto’s involvement. Aliz arrives and decapitates him with a silver sword.
Beneath the red blood moon eclipse, Rebecca and Aliz consume pieces of his still-beating heart, destroying the Familiar’s mark and freeing Rebecca from the bond.
Rebecca formally renounces Callisto and vows to hunt Penny and the corrupt Stake leaders who arranged her family’s death. Three weeks later, Aliz finds her on the moonlit roof of Tynahine.
Both realize their feelings were genuine love rather than magical compulsion. They share a kiss and commit to facing the coming conflict together.
