Famous Once Summary: Jane Green’s Rock Secret

A Supermodel, a Rock Star, and a Tape Nobody Was Supposed to Hear

Astrid Lane once stood at the center of 1970s London glamour.

She was a top model discovered on Fulham Road, married to Callum Blake, the lead singer of the Leopards, and living what the tabloids called a fairy-tale life at Latchkey Farm.

Forty years later, she caters parties in a rural cottage and keeps her past behind a closed door. Then a nostalgic podcast about her ex-husband’s career pulls the door open again.

In Famous Once: A Short Story, Jane Green moves between 1974, 1976, and 2025 to follow a family trying to survive what fame left behind.

Famous Once Summary (Spoilers Ahead)

Spoiler warning: the following section describes the plot and ending of Famous Once.

In 1974, Astrid Lane is a London model living with her Swedish roommate Birgit. Birgit drags her to Annabel’s, where Callum Blake’s manager, Vic Roth, harasses her. Callum intervenes, and the two begin a relationship built on astrology, meditation, and long conversations.

They marry in 1976 in an Ibiza ceremony led by a Balinese priest named Suryawan. Their daughter, Zara, is born soon after, and the family settles at Latchkey Farm. For a while, the arrangement looks like an escape from the music industry’s machinery.

Then eighteen-year-old Lily Morehouse drowns at a party at the estate. The death is treated as an accident, and nobody is charged. In the years that follow, the household slides into drug use, infidelity, and open excess.

Callum tours constantly and fathers a child with a groupie. Astrid’s drinking becomes severe, and she eventually leaves him. Vic Roth then manipulates the courts into declaring the marriage legally invalid, cutting Astrid out of any settlement.

She keeps only one thing of value: Callum’s archived reel-to-reel audio tapes. By 2025, Astrid is fifty, financially strained, and working as a caterer. Zara, now an investigative journalist, is estranged from her and contacts her about a ’70s retrospective podcast celebrating Callum’s career.

A break-in at Astrid’s cottage unsettles them both. Zara persuades her mother to find the tapes, and the recordings contain Callum’s confession. Vic Roth, he says, held Lily under the water too long during drunken pool horseplay, and then swore Callum to silence.

A thug sent by Vic threatens Astrid and tells her not to let a ghost ruin her final years. Zara ignores the warning and publishes a global exposƩ built from the tape transcripts. Vic Roth is arrested for manslaughter, and Callum responds to the media fallout with little concern.

The proceeds from the story clear the financial problems of both Astrid and Zara. More importantly, the work brings mother and daughter back into conversation about grief they never discussed.

The book closes with Callum and Astrid standing on either side of Zara, their family intact in a form none of them expected.
