Make It Out Alive: An Undercover Honeymoon That Becomes a Fight for Survival

That is the case facing the FBI’s Mobile Response Team at Sapphire Shoals, an oceanfront resort where wealthy newlyweds check in and never check out.
Make It Out Alive by Allison Brennan is the seventh entry in the Quinn & Costa Thrillers series.
FBI Special Agent Matt Costa and LAPD Detective Kara Quinn pose as a married couple to draw out the killer, an operation that ends with an arrest and, hours later, a far worse outcome.

Make It Out Alive Summary: The Full Story
Spoilers ahead. This section recounts the main events of the novel, including its ending.
The investigation opens at Sapphire Shoals in Flagler County, Florida. Six honeymooners have been killed over seven months, and the most recent victims, Mitch and Sheila Avila, washed ashore bound together.
Matt Costa and Kara Quinn check in as newlyweds to bait the killer.
On their fifth morning, resort maintenance worker Garrett Reid drugs their breakfast with ketamine. Matt and Kara had tested the food first, so they fake unconsciousness when Reid enters with a laundry cart, zip ties, and duct tape.
FBI Agent Michael Harris spots what he believes is a weapon and orders a takedown. Reid is arrested without resistance and calls the whole thing a misunderstanding.
In interrogation, Reid appears dazed and cooperative. He fits the profile drawn by FBI forensic psychiatrist Dr. Catherine Jones: a bright thirty-year-old man working well below his abilities.

District Attorney John Anson and Detective Bianca Fuentes have no physical evidence linking Reid to the homicides. Reid asks for a lawyer and contacts Franklin Graves, a civil attorney from Jacksonville.
With Reid jailed and awaiting arraignment, Matt and Kara stay at the resort for an off-duty weekend. On Sunday morning, someone spikes their coffee with a prescription muscle relaxant and hits them with tranquilizer darts.
They are loaded into a laundry cart, driven across state lines, and taken to Clinch County, Georgia.
Matt wakes in a dark cinderblock room. Kara comes to inside a freight elevator stuck between floors, and when she pries at the doors, a sabotaged cable drops the car down the shaft. Matt pulls her clear as it crashes.
The two navigate a flooded, pitch-black cannery. A metal step cracks and slices Matt’s ankle, a ceiling beam collapses on a lever, and locked doors marked with green exit lights steer them through a maze.
They reach an elevated control room over the factory floor. A camera blinks red, and a woman’s cheerful voice comes through the speakers, telling them they will need to wait. Heavy doors slam shut.
Matt smashes the cameras and monitors to blind the watcher.
In Florida, the Mobile Response Team realizes both agents are gone and that Reid must have a partner. Resort footage shows an unidentified figure in a maintenance uniform pushing a laundry cart.
The figure is identified as Hope Davidson, a thirty-five-year-old gym employee at the resort who lied on her resume and once worked at the same New Orleans property as Garrett Reid.
Meanwhile, Franklin Graves is being coerced. His wife Lily, an ER nurse, and his eleven-year-old son Nathan are held in an iron cell in the basement of an abandoned Georgia farmhouse near the cannery.
A phone-wired device sits on a gas canister in that basement, and Graves is told it detonates if he fails to get Reid released on bail.
On Tuesday morning, Matt and Kara cross the factory catwalks. Chains that had been sawed through snap, and Kara falls two stories into the murky water. Matt drops after her and cracks his ribs.
They force the exit doors using a six-foot stainless steel eyewash basin. The basin triggers a tripwire, and a net of bowling balls and twisted rebar crashes down behind them.
They climb out through a factory window into daylight. Bruised, bleeding, and dehydrated, they eat wild blackberries and hike toward a farmhouse.
There, Matt finds a terrified Lily Graves. He examines the device on the gas canister in the basement and discovers the supposed explosive is harmless white modeling clay, built purely to terrify.
Upstairs, Kara picks the lock on Nathan’s cell with straightened paperclips and pliers, and frees the boy.
A second device is already working. A plastic bottle drips a lye solution onto the wooden support beams, and the beams dissolve. The farmhouse floor caves into the basement and rips a gas pipe from the wall.
The house explodes as Matt drags an unconscious Lily out the front door. FBI SWAT and paramedics arrive by helicopter minutes later.
Agent Sloane Wagner searches Hope Davidson’s residence and finds a velvet box holding fake IDs, financial records, and a wedding certificate. Hope’s legal name is Clara Dolan, also known as Audrey Reid, a thirty-five-year-old heiress to a ten-million-dollar trust fund who married Garrett Reid five years earlier in Las Vegas.
Catherine Jones concludes that Clara is a manipulative psychopath who selected the resort victims herself. Her first target, Emily Masters Henderson, was a personal grudge.
Years earlier in Los Angeles, Emily had been promoted over Clara and had married Clara’s ex-boyfriend. Clara had seduced Emily’s father to break up her parents’ marriage just before Emily’s first wedding.
Catherine interrogates Garrett in his Jacksonville hotel room and tells him who Clara really is. She also presents evidence that Clara murdered Becca McCarthy, Garrett’s high school sweetheart, who vanished seven and a half years earlier in Ventura County.
Garrett learns the woman he trusted for eight years killed the only person he ever genuinely loved. His loyalty collapses.
Clara flees to her family’s trust estate on Kiawah Island, South Carolina. FBI SWAT and local officers surround the property.
She triggers bear traps in the garden to injure pursuing officers and tries to swim away through the tidal river. Michael Harris, a former Navy SEAL, dives in, tackles her, and brings her ashore in handcuffs.
Four months later, Clara Dolan faces federal trial on counts of kidnapping, extortion, and capital murder. Garrett Reid, living as a homeless man, ambushes her outside the courthouse during a prisoner transport.
He fires three shots from a paper bag, killing her instantly to avenge Becca McCarthy. He drops the weapon and surrenders to corrections officers with the words, “Game over, Audrey. I won.”
